The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • The results of the annual round of council elections have all been recorded, but we note here the outcomes of byelections in authorities which did not have regularly scheduled elections.
  • Allerdale: The byelection in St Michael’s ward held on 5 May was won by Barbara Cannon. Labour hold.
  • Brighton and Hove: The byelection in Rottingdean Coastal ward held on 5 May was won by Robert McIntosh. Labour gain from Conservative.
  • Carlisle: The byelection in Longtown and the Border ward held on 5 May was won by Timothy Pickstone. Liberal Democrat gain from Conservative.
  • Chelmsford: The byelection in Little Baddow, Danbury and Sandon ward held on 5 May was won by Steph Scott. Conservative hold.
  • Derbyshire Dales: The byelection in Carsington Water ward held on 5 May was won by Janet Rose, who follows her late husband. Conservative hold.
  • Harrogate: The byelection in Wathvale ward held on 5 May was won by Sam Green. Conservative hold.
  • Lewes: The byelection in Peacehaven West ward held on 12 May was won by Ciarron Clarkson. Labour gain from Conservative.
  • Rutland: The byelection in Uppingham ward held on 5 May was won by Stephen Lambert. Liberal Democrat gain from the Green Party (who did not defend their seat).
  • Sevenoaks: The byelection in Fawkham and West Kingsdown held on 5 May was won by Emily Bulford. Conservative hold.
  • South Norfolk: The byelection in Mulbarton and Stoke Holy Cross ward held on 5 May was won by Ian Spratt. Liberal Democrat hold.
  • South Ribble: The byelection in Earnshaw Bridge ward held on 5 May was won by Lou Jackson. Labour hold.
  • Staffordshire Moorlands: The byelection in Cheadle South East ward held on 5 May was won by Zenobia Routledge. Conservative gain from Independent.
  • Vale of White Horse: The byelection in Steventon and The Hanneys ward held on 5 May was won by Sally Povolotsky. Liberal Democrat gain from Conservative.
  • Waverley: The byelection in Frensham, Dockenfield and Tilford ward held on 12 May was won by David Munro. Independent gain from Conservative.

Changes of allegiance

  • Aberdeenshire: Robbie Withey, who was elected for the Conservatives in Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford ward, had been suspended from the party during the election and is therefore sitting as an Independent councillor.
  • Dorset: Kate Wheller, who was elected in Rodwell and Wyke ward for the Labour Party but had joined the Alliance for Local Living group in October 2019, has now left it to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Folkestone and Hythe: Danny Brook, who was elected for the Conservatives in Folkestone Central ward, has joined the Folkestone and Hythe Independent Group.
  • Forest of Dean: Lynn Sterry, who was elected for the Labour Party in Cinderford West ward but joined the Progressive Independents in January, has now returned to the Labour Party.
  • Hartlepool: Gordon Cranney, who was elected for the Conservatives, has taken his seat as an Independent after a criminal conviction.
  • Kent: Alan Marsh, who was elected for the Conservatives in Herne Village and Sturry division but left the party in March, has now returned.
  • Rutland: Two councillors have left the Conservative group: Samantha Harvey (Cottesmore ward), and Oliver Hemsley (Langham ward). The Independent Group has admitted the Green Party councillor and is now known as the Independent and Green group.
  • Sefton: Two councillors have left the Conservative group to establish the Southport Councillor Group. They are Sinclair D’Albuquerque (Cambridge ward) and Terry Jones (Ainsdale ward). In addition two councillors have left the Labour group to establish the Lydiate, Maghull, Aintree and Lunt Community Independents together with fellow ex-Labour councillor Patrick McKinley. They are John Sayers and Andrew Wilson, both of whom represent Park ward.
  • Staffordshire Moorlands: Amid the leadership turmoil (see below), the Independent members have left the Conservative group to form the Biddulph Independents group. Michael Bowen (Cheddleton ward) has left the Conservatives to become a non-aligned Independent, while Norma Hawkins (Horton ward), Brian Johnson (Leek East ward) and Phil Routledge (Cheadle North East ward) have joined the Conservatives having previously been Independent councillors.
  • Thanet: Pauline Farrance and Candy Gregory, both of whom were elected for the Labour Party in Salmestone ward but then left the party, are not joining the Green Party as previously announced but instead joining a Green and Independent group.

New vacancies

  • Breckland: Thetford Boudica ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Mark Robinson. Term ends 2023.
  • Bridgend: Bridgend Central ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Stuart Baldwin. Term ends 2027.
  • Buckinghamshire: Bernwood division, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Cameron Branston. Term ends 2025.
  • Crawley: Southgate ward, after the disqualification of Labour councillor Mike Pickett, who did not attend any meetings in six months due to ill health. Term ends 2023.
  • Croydon: South Croydon ward, after the disqualification of Conservative councillor Jason Perry who was elected as Mayor of Croydon. Term ends 2026.
  • Harlow: Bush Fair ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Marco Lorenzini. Term ends 2026.
  • Newark and Sherwood: Ollerton ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Neal Mitchell. Term ends 2023.
  • Rutland: Oakham South ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Ian Razzell, who was elected as a Conservative. Term ends 2023.
  • South Derbyshire: Midway ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor David Angliss, who had been elected for the Conservatives. Term ends 2023.
  • South Staffordshire: Penkridge North East and Acton Trussell ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Isabel Ford. Term ends 2023.

Dates for byelections

  • Breckland: The byelection due in Mattishall ward will be held on 9 June.
  • Crawley: The byelection due in Southgate ward will be held on 9 June.
  • Eilean Siar: The byelection due in Barraigh agus Bhatarsaigh ward will be held on 30 June.
  • Eilean Siar: The byelection due in Sgìr’ Ùige agus Carlabhagh ward will be held on 30 June.
  • Harlow: The byelection due in Bush Fair ward will be held on 23 June.
  • Rother: The byelection due in Brede and Udimore ward will be held on 16 June.
  • Sevenoaks: The byelection due in Penshurst, Fordcombe and Chiddingstone ward will be held on 9 June.
  • Sunderland: The election in Copt Hill ward which was postponed from 5 May will take place on 16 June.
  • Waverley: The byelection due in Hindhead ward will be held on 23 June.
  • Wyre Forest: The byelection due in Franche and Habberley North ward will be held on 16 June.
