Independent 4. City (status granted 2000) on the Sussex coast; a very cosmopolitan area. In 2011 it became the first council to be controlled by the Green Party.

A Labour administration gave way to the Green Party in July 2020. Nichole Brennan (East Brighton) and Kate Knight (Moulsecoomb and Bevendean) moved from Labour to Independent in July 2020.
