Independent 4. City (status granted 2000) on the Sussex coast; a very cosmopolitan area. Resort town dependent on tourism and conferences, but also IT connected to the universities. In 2011 it became the first council to be controlled by the Green Party.

Anne Pissaridou (North Portslade) moved from Independent to Labour, and Peter Atkinson (North Portslade) moved from Labour to Independent, in August 2021. At a byelection on 6 May, the Green Party gained Hollingdean and Stanmer from Labour.
