Independent 4. City (status granted 2000) on the Sussex coast; a very cosmopolitan area. In 2011 it became the first council to be controlled by the Green Party.
There are impending vacancies in Hollingdean and Stanmer (held by Labour) and Patcham (held by the Conservatives). A Labour administration gave way to the Green Party in July 2020. Nichole Brennan (East Brighton) and Kate Knight (Moulsecoomb and Bevendean) moved from Labour to Independent in July 2020.
