Independent 4. Border city in Cumbria, originally a mill town and later an important railway centre. The district also includes a large rural area with agriculture leading the local economy.

The Secretary of State intends to abolish the council and incorporate it into a west Cumbria unitary council. Currock and Upperby ward has a vacant seat (held by the UK Independence Party). At byelections on 6 May the Conservatives gained Harraby South and Parklands, and Newtown and Morton North, from Labour. Elections due in 2021 have been postponed by a year to allow a consultation on unitary local government in Cumbria.
