Chelmsford

Independent 3, Chelmsford Independents Group 2. New city (created for the diamond jubilee) in central Essex; previously centre of Marconi radio, now rapidly expanding as a high technology centre and residential town.

The government proposes to merge the council with Brentwood and Maldon to create a new unitary Mid Essex council in 2027. The Conservatives gained a seat from the Liberal Democrats in Broomfield and The Walthams at a byelection on 7 May. Jacob Armstrong (Little Baddow, Danbury and Sandon) moved from Conservative to Reform UK in March 2026.
