The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Result

  • Luton: The byelection in Stopsley ward held on 4 September was won by Matt Fry. Liberal Democrat hold.

Defections

  • Broadland: Trudy Mancini-Boyle, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Thorpe St Andrew South East ward, has left the group to sit as an Independent Conservative.
  • Chelmsford: Paul Clark, who was elected as an Independent councillor for Rettendon and Runwell ward and had been a member of the Chelmsford Independents Group, has joined Reform UK.
  • Dacorum: Ian Bristow, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Berkhamsted Castle ward, has been suspended from the party whip over a social media post.
  • Monmouthshire: Tony Easson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Dewstow ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Rushmoor: Four Labour councillors have left the party to form the Rushmoor Independent Group. As a result the Labour group no longer has an overall majority. The defectors are Jules Crossley (Aldershot Park ward), Halleh Koohestani (Rowhill ward), Nadia Martin (Wellington ward) and Becky Williams (Manor Park ward). In addition Abe Allen (Fernhill ward), who left the Labour Party in July, has joined the group.
  • Peterborough: Dennis Jones, who was elected for the Labour Party in Dogsthorpe East ward and was council leader until this week, has been suspended from the party group and is sitting Independent councillor.
  • Preston: Stephen Thompson, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Preston Rural North ward, has joined Reform UK.
  • Southwark: Two Labour councillors have had the whip withdrawn for failing to obey the party whip in a council meeting. They are Sam Foster and Ketzia Harper, both of whom represent Faraday ward.
  • Trafford: Ulrich Savary, who was elected for the Labour Party in Broadheath ward but left the party in July, has now joined the Liberal Democrats.
  • West Lindsey: Trevor Bridgwood, who was elected for the Conservatives in Cherry Willingham ward but left the party in December 2024 to form the Consensus Independent Group, has now become a Reform UK councillor; he remains a supporter of the administration group. He was elected to Lincolnshire County Council for Reform UK in May.
  • West Suffolk: Three councillors have left the Independents Group to sit as non-grouped Independent councillors. They are Tony Brown (Haverhill South East ward), Paul Firman (Haverhill North ward) and Aaron Luccarini (Haverhill Central ward).

New vacancies

  • Bath and North East Somerset: Widcombe and Lyncombe ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Deborah Collins for health reasons. Term ends 2027.
  • East Devon: Exmouth Halsdon ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Toye. Term ends 2027.
  • East Sussex: Ashdown and Conquest division, after the death of Conservative county councillor Peter Pragnell. Term ends May next year.
  • Fenland: Whittlesey North West ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Elisabeth Sennitt. Term ends 2027.
  • Newark and Sherwood: Balderton North and Coddington ward, after the resignation of Green Party councillor Emma Oldham who was elected as an Independent. Term ends 2027.
  • Newark and Sherwood: Castle ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Adrian Amer. Term ends 2027.
  • Reigate and Banstead: Meadvale and St John’s ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Christopher Thompson. Term ends May next year.
  • Somerset: Dunster ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Christine Lawrence due to ill health. Term ends 2027.
  • Surrey: Guildford South East division, after the resignation of Residents 4 Guildford and Villages county councillor Fiona Davidson. Term ends May next year.
  • Thanet: Garlinge ward, after the resignation Thanet Independent councillor John Worrow. Term ends 2027.

  • Babergh: The byelection due in Copdock and Washbrook ward will be held on 16 October.
  • Bath and North East Somerset: WThe byelection due in idcombe and Lyncombe ward will be held on 9 October.
  • Hart: The byelection due in Yateley West ward will be held on Wednesday 8 October.
  • North Northamptonshire: The byelection due in Lloyds and Corby Village ward will be held on 9 October.
  • Preston: The byelection due in Ashton ward will be held on 16 October.
  • Redcar and Cleveland: The byelection due in Skelton East ward will be held on 9 October.
  • Spelthorne: The byelection due in Staines ward will be held on 16 October.
  • Surrey: The byelection due in Guildford South East division will be held on 16 October.
  • West Lancashire: The byelection due in Aughton and Holborn ward will be held on 9 October.
