Independent 3. The 'rose of the Shires', in the East Midlands and in easy reach of both Birmingham and London. The county council hit severe financial difficulties in early 2018 over the capital cost of its new headquarters.

The council will be abolished in 2021 as part of local government reorganisation. The Secretary of State has appoint Commissioners to take over governance of the council. Rob Gough (Earls Barton) moved from Conservative to Independent in June 2020. Towcester and Roade division is vacant (held by the Conservatives).
