Independent 9. The council leadership will rotate between the three coalition partners. Southern Suffolk, including Constable country; Sudbury is the only large town. The council is in a partnership with Mid Suffolk; a referendum in 2011 narrowly rejected merger.

The government proposes to abolish the council in 2027, with most forming part of a new unitary Western Suffolk council, and 31 parishes forming part of Ipswich and South Suffolk. Michael Holt (Chadacre) moved from Conservative to Reform UK in March 2026. Reform UK gained a seat in Copdock and Washbrook from the Liberal Democrats at a byelection on 16 October.
