The government proposes to merge the council with parts of Babergh and Mid Suffolk to creat a new unitary Western Suffolk council in 2027. Abbeygate has a byelection on 7 May (held by the Conservatives). Don Waldron (The Rows) moved from Conservative to Reform UK in January 2026. Ian Houlder (Barrow) moved from non-aligned to Reform UK in November 2025.
