The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

Defections

  • Caerphilly: Sean Morgan, who was elected for the Labour Party in Nelson ward and was Leader of the council, has left the role and his party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Fife: Gavin Ellis, who was elected for the Conservatives in Dunfermline North ward, has joined Reform UK.
  • Flintshire: Arnold Woolley (Buckley Bistre East ward) who was leader of the Eagle group on the council, has left it to join the Independent group.
  • Greenwich: Two councillors have left the Labour group to sit as Independent councillors following deselection as candidates for 2026. They are Ann-Marie Cousins (Abbey Wood ward) and Lakshan Saldin (Charlton Hornfair ward).
  • Kent: Amelia Randall, who was elected for Reform UK in Birchington and Rural division, has joined the UK Independence Party.
  • Oadby and Wigston: Two councillors have left the Conservative Party to sit as Independent councillors. They are Priti Joshi (Oadby Grange ward) and Rupa Joshi (Oadby Uplands ward).
  • Lambeth: Martin Abrams, who was elected for the Labour Party in Streatham St Leonard’s ward but left the party last month, has now joined the Green Party.
  • Oldham: Lewis Quigg, who was elected for the Conservatives in Royton North ward, has been expelled from the party.
  • Solihull: Three of the councillors who left the Conservatives to form Solihull Independents in May-June have now joined Reform UK. They are Michael Gough (Silhill ward), Alan Feeney (Castle Bromwich ward) and Samantha Gethen (St Alphege ward).
  • Stoke-on-Trent: David Mountford, who was elected for the Labour Party in Great Chell and Packmoor ward, has joined the Potteries Party.
  • Swindon: Ian Edwards, who was elected for the Labour Party in Priory Vale ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Tunbridge Wells: David Knight, who was elected for Tunbridge Wells Alliance in Rural Tunbridge Wells ward but left the group in August, has now joined the Conservatives.
  • Waltham Forest: Marion Fitzgerald, who was elected for the Conservatives in Hatch Lane and Highams Park North ward but left the group last month, has now returned.
  • Wirral: Jean Robinson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Upton ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • West Sussex: Graham McKnight, who was elected for the Labour Party in Worthing West division, has left the party to sit as an Independent county councillor.
  • Worthing: Josh Harris, who was elected for the Conservatives in Durrington ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.

New vacancies

  • Burnley: Lanehead ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Fiona Wild, who was elected for the Labour Party. Term ends 2027.
  • Colchester: New Town and Christ Church ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Pam Cox, now Member of Parliament for Colchester. Term ends May next year.
  • Portsmouth: Paulsgrove ward, after the resignation of Portsmouth Independents Party councillor Brian Madgwick due to ill health. Term ends May next year.
  • Surrey: Caterham Valley division, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Jeffrey Gray. Term ends May next year.
  • Tandridge: Whyteleafe ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Jeffrey Gray. Term ends 2027.
  • Tunbridge Wells: St John’s ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Matt Fox. Term ends May next year.

Dates for byelections

  • Reigate and Banstead: The byelection due in Meadvale and St John’s ward will be held on 16 October.
  • Stirling: The byelection due in Stirling East ward will be held on 30 October.
  • Surrey: The byelection due in Camberley West division will be held on 16 October.
  • Surrey: The byelection due in Caterham Valley division will be held on 16 October.
  • Tandridge: The byelection due in Whyteleafe ward will be held on 16 October.
  • Trafford: The byelection due in Broadheath ward will be held on 16 October.
