The government proposes to merge the council with Braintree and Tendring to create a new unitary North East Essex council in 2027. The Progressive Independent Alliance was formed by ex-Labour councillors Sam McLean (New Town and Christchurch), Martyn Warnes and Chris Pearson (both Berechurch) together with Independent Lesley Scott-Boutell (Stanway) in May 2026. Reform UK gained a seat from the Green Party in Coggeshall at a byelection on 5 March.
