The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Bradford: The byelection in Worth Valley ward held on 12 February was won by Paul Golding. Conservative hold.
  • Pembrokeshire: The byelection in Fishguard North East ward held on 10 February was won by Billy Shaw. Plaid Cymru gain from an unaffiliated councillor elected for Labour.
  • Peterborough: The byelection in Fletton and Woodston ward held on 12 February was won by Andrew O’Neil. Reform UK gain from Labour.

Defections

New vacancies

  • Chesterfield: Staveley North ward, after the death of Labour councillor Steve Lismore. Term ends 2027.
  • Cornwall: Newquay Porth and Tretherras division, after the death of Reform UK councillor Kevin Towill. Term ends 2029.
  • Somerset: Mendip Hills division, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Tony Robbins. Term ends 2027.

Dates for byelections

  • North Devon: The byelection due in Fremington ward will be held on 2 April.
  • Rossendale: The byelection due in Hareholme and Waterfoot ward will be held on 2 April.
  • Vale of White Horse: The byelection due in Stanford ward will be held on 26 March.

Other updates

  • Unless annulled by Parliament, the Local Authorities (Changes to Years of Ordinary Elections) (England) Order 2026 will come into force on 27 February and have the effect of delaying elections in 30 local authorities which were due on 7 May 2026, to 2027. The Order will also provide that vacant seats in these authorities must be filled by a byelection held on or before 7 May. This provision currently affects the following vacancies: Cannock Chase, Hednesford Hill and Rawnsley ward; Hyndburn, St Oswalds ward; Norfolk divisions of Diss and Roydon, Freebridge Lynn, Town Close, Wensum, and Yare and All Saints; Peterborough, Fletton and Woodston ward; Tamworth, Mercian ward; and West Sussex, Littlehampton Town division.
