Durham Group 12 (group including Green Party, 5 Independents, 4 Derwentside Independents, 2 North East Party); Independent group 9, County Durham Independents 3, Spennymoor and Tudhoe Independent 3, Unaligned Group 3, non-aligned 2, Independent 1. Unitary council covering most of the historic north-eastern county; formerly dominated by mining and still an important manufacturing centre.

Labour held Coxhoe at a byelection on 4 July. Angela Hanson (Stanley) and Sam McMahon (Craghead and South Moor) moved from Labour to non-aligned in July 2024. Mike McGaun (Lanchester) moved from Conservative to Independent in May 2024.
