The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Cardiff: The byelection in Heath division held on 11 November was won by Julie Sangani. Labour gain from an Independent.
  • Denbighshire: The byelection in Llandrillo division held on 11 November was won by Gwyneth Ellis. Plaid Cymru hold.
  • Lancaster: The byelection in University and Scotforth Rural ward held on 11 November was won by Fabiha Askari. Labour regain a seat lost when the previous councillor left the party.
  • Melton: The byelection in Melton Dorian ward held on 11 November was won by Tim Webster. The Conservatives regain the seat.
  • North Kesteven: The byelection for two seats in Metheringham ward held on 11 November was won by Fran Pembery of the Conservative Party and Amelia Bailey of the Lincolnshire Independents – who was elected on the drawing of lots. The Conservatives gain one seat from the Lincolnshire Independents; Lincolnshire Independents hold the other.
  • North Kesteven: The byelection in Sleaford Castle ward held on 11 November was won by Malcolm Offer. Conservative gain from Lincolnshire Independent.
  • Thanet: The byelection in Thanet Villages ward held on 11 November was won by Abi Smith. Green Party hold.

Changes of allegiance

  • Cardiff: Andrea Gibson, who was elected for Plaid Cymru in Ely division, but joined the Propel group in October 2019, has now left the group to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Carlisle: Jo Ellis-Williams, who was elected for Labour in Harraby South and Parklands ward, has joined the Conservative Party.
  • North Kesteven: Three councillors have moved from Lincolnshire Independents to the NK Administration group. They are Nikki Dillon (North Hykeham Memorial ward), Mervyn Head (Kirkby La Thorpe and South Kyme ward) and Jordan Moran (Bracebridge Heath and Waddington East ward).
  • Rochdale: Kath Nickson (Balderstone and Kirkholt ward) has left the Conservative group to sit as an Independent councillor. Originally elected for Labour, her party political allegiance has gone Labour, Independent, Liberal Democrat, Brexit Party, Independent, Conservative, and now Independent again.

New vacancies

  • Durham: Ferryhill division, after the death of Independent councillor Brian Avery. Term ends 2025.
  • Knowsley: Page Moss ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Andy Moorhead. Term ends next May.
  • North Kesteven: Although not notified until after byelections to elect their successors, we record now the resignation of Lincolnshire Independents councillors Nick Byatt and Laura Pearson (both representing Metheringham ward) on 31 August, and Cara Sandy (Sleaford Castle ward) on 23 September.
  • Rutland: Ryhall and Casterton ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Richard Coleman, who was elected for the Conservatives. Term ends 2023.
  • South Cambridgeshire: Harston and Comberton ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Fiona Whelan. As her term was due to end in May next year, she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Tonbridge and Malling: West Malling and Leybourne ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lee O’Toole. Term ends 2023.
  • Torridge: Northam ward, after the disqualification of Independent councillor Giuseppe Rossi who did not attend any council meetings for six months. Term ends 2023.
  • West Berkshire: Tilehurst South and Holybrook ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Argyle. Term ends 2023.

Dates for byelections

  • Bridgend: The byelection due in Caerau division will be held on 16 December.
  • Medway: The byelection due in Rochester East ward will be held on 16 December.
  • Middlesbrough: The byelection due in North Ormesby ward will be held on 16 December.
  • Northumberland: The byelection due in Hexham East division will be held on 16 December.
  • Tonbridge and Malling: The byelection due in West Malling and Leybourne ward will be held on 9 December.
  • Torridge: The byelection due in Northam ward will be held on 9 December.
  • Walsall: The byelection due in Pleck ward will be held on 16 December.
  • West Berkshire: The byelection due in Tilehurst South and Holybrook ward will be held on 16 December.
  • West Lindsey: The byelection due in Nettleham ward will be held on 16 December.

Other updates

  • Since the beginning of the week, we have been within six months of the full council elections due in May 2022. New vacancies in seats which are up for election next May are not filled in byelections.
