Independent Group 8, non-aligend 3. North-east Leicestershire, and predominantly rural; main town is Melton Mowbray, famous for pork pies. The council offices burned down in May 2008.

The government proposes to merge the council with Hinckley and Bosworth, North West Leicestershire, Rutland and parts of Blaby, Charnwood and Harborough to create a unitary Leicestershire and Rutland council. A Conservative/Independent administration took over from a Labour/Independent one in April 2026. Pip Allnatt (Melton Egerton) moved from Labour to non-aligned in April 2026.
