Independent 2. A cluster of industrial towns around the Medway estuary in north Kent: Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rainham. Rochester, with historic associations with Charles Dickens, lost city status when it failed to establish Charter Trustees in 1998.

Labour held Rochester East at a byelection on 16 December, and gained Strood North from an Independent Conservative elected as a Conservative, at a byelection on 26 August.
