Independent 2. A cluster of industrial towns around the Medway estuary in north Kent: Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rainham. Rochester, with historic associations with Charles Dickens, lost city status when it failed to establish Charter Trustees in 1998.

At byelections on 26 August, Labour gained Strood North from an Independent Conservative elected as a Conservative; the Conservatives held Princes Park.
