The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Results
Highland: The byelection in Inverness South ward held on 11 April was won by Duncan McDonald, who was an Independent candidate and took a seat held by the Liberal Democrats.
North Yorkshire: The byelection in Stray, Woodlands and Hookstone ward held on 11 April was won by Andrew Timothy. Liberal Democrat hold.
Changes of allegiance
Dorset: The Alliance for Local Living group has renamed itself ‘Independents for Dorset’ (and are seeking re-election under this name in the current full council election).
East Devon: Daniel Wilson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Exmouth Halsdon ward, has left the party to sit as an ungrouped Independent councillor.
East Renfrewshire: Annette Ireland, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Clarkston, Netherlee and Williamwood ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
Leicester: Deepak Bajaj, who was most recently elected for the Conservatives in Evington ward and was their group leader, has rejoined the Labour Party only 18 months after leaving it.
Merthyr Tydfil: Kevin Gibbs, who was elected for the Labour Party in Penydarren division, has left the party to sit as an ungrouped Independent councillor.
Oldham: Two councillors from Werneth ward who were elected for the Labour Party, have left the party to sit as Independent councillors; they are Shoab Akhtar and Nyla Ibrahim. Meanwhile two councillors elected as Independents have formed an Independent Group.
Oxfordshire: A new ‘Independent Voice of Oxfordshire’ group has been formed by Sally Povolotsky (Hendreds and Harwell division) who left the Liberal Democrats last December, Damian Haywood (Iffley Fields and St Mary’s division) who left the Labour Party in September, and Stefan Gawrysiak (Henley-on-Thames division) who was elected for Henley Residents Group.
Rotherham: Taiba Yasseen, who was elected for the Labour Party in Boston Castle ward, has left the party and is sitting as a non-aligned Independent councillor.
Birmingham: Kingstanding ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Rick Payne shortly after his suspension. Term ends 2026.
Mansfield: West Bank ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Ben Brown. Term ends 2027.
Melton: Wymondham ward, after the resignation of veteran Conservative councillor Malise Graham. Term ends 2027.
Powys: Rhiwcynon division, after the resignation of Independent Group leader Heulwen Hulme. Term ends 2027.
Sunderland: Ryhope ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Usman Ali who was elected for the Conservatives, joined the Labour Party in March 2023, and was then suspended from it. His term would have ended next month so no byelection follows.
