Results
Changes of allegiance
- Blaenau Gwent: Hedley McCarthy, who was elected for the Labour Party in Llanhilleth division and is a former council leader, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned councillor.
- East Ayrshire: John Bell, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Doon Valley ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Falkirk: Niall Coleman, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Bonnybridge and Larpert ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Kent: Alan Marsh, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Herne Village and Sturry division, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Knowsley: John Morgan, who was elected for the Labour Party in Whitefield ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- South Kesteven: John Cottier, who was elected as a Conservative in Grantham Barrowby Gate ward but left the party in October last year, has now returned to the group.
- Stirling: Alasdair MacPherson, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Bannockburn ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor. In addition Alastair Majury, elected for the Conservatives in Dunblane and Bridge of Allan ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Wakefield: Akef Akbar, who was elected for the Conservatives in Wakefield East ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.

- Allerdale: St Michael’s ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Mary Bainbridge. Term ends 2023.
- Birmingham: Sparkhill ward, after the death of veteran Labour councillor Mohammed Fazal. His term was due to end in May so no byelection ensues.
- Brighton and Hove: Rottingdean Coastal ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Joe Miller. Term ends 2023.
- Cheltenham: College ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Guy Maughfling. Term ends 2024.
- Exeter: Exwick ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Ollie Pearson. Term ends 2023.
- Exeter: Heavitree ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Chris Buswell. Term ends 2023.
- Exeter: Priory ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Alys Martin. Term ends 2024.
- Kensington and Chelsea: Earl’s Court ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Malcolm Spalding. His current term would have ended in May so there will be no byelection.
- Leeds: Horsforth ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jonathan Taylor, who is taking up a politically restricted post. Term ends 2024.
- Lewes: Peacehaven West ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Joe Miller. Term ends 2023.
- Newcastle upon Tyne: Benwell and Scotswood, after the resignation of veteran Labour councillor Jeremy Beecham. Term ends 2023.
- Newcastle upon Tyne: Blakelaw, after the resignation of Labour councillor Oskar Avery. His term was due to end in May so he will not be replaced in a byelection.
- Oldham: Medlock Vale ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sahr Abid. Term ends 2024.
- Preston: Brookfield ward, after the death of Labour councillor John Browne. Term ends 2023.
- Redditch: Greenlands ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Jenny Wheeler. Term ends 2023.
- Rugby: Bilton ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Chris Cade. His term was due to end in May so no byelection will follow.
- South Norfolk: Mulbarton and Stoke Holy Cross ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Vivienne Clifford-Jackson. Term ends 2023.
- South Ribble: Earnshaw Bridge ward, after the death of Labour councillor Bill Evans. Term ends 2023.
- Southampton: Shirley ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Mark Chaloner. Term ends 2024.
- Vale of White Horse: Steventon and the Hanneys ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Matthew Barber, now Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley. Term ends 2023.
- Waltham Forest: William Morris ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Joe Lacey-Holland. His term was due to end in May so no byelection will follow.
- Warwick: Leamington Clarendon ward, after the death of Labour councillor Konathan Nicholls. Term ends 2023.
- Welwyn Hatfield: Handside ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Anthony Dennis. Term ends 2023.
- West Lancashire: Wrightington ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Pam Baybutt. Term ends 2023.
Dates for byelections
- Brighton and Hove: The byelection due in Rottingdean Coastal ward will be held on 5 May.
- Derbyshire Dales: The byelection due in Carsington Water ward will be held on 5 May.
- South Norfolk: The byelection due in Mulbarton and Stoke Holy Cross ward will be held on 5 May.
- West Lancashire: The byelection due in Wrightington ward will be held on 5 May.
Other updates
- Structural change orders have today been made for the three areas which are to become unitary councils. As a result there will be shadow elections in May for four new councils (Cumberland, North Yorkshire, Somerset, and Westmorland and Furness). The terms of office for current councillors have been extended until 1 April 2023.
