The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Allerdale: The byelection in Maryport South ward held on 25 November was won by Billy Pegram. Labour gain from non-aligned Independent.
  • Basildon: The byelection in Lee Chapel North ward held on 25 November was won by Terry Webb. Labour hold.
  • Halton: The byelection in Halton Castle ward held on 25 November was won by Sharon Thornton. Labour hold.
  • Hambleton: The byelection in Raskelf and White Horse ward held on 25 November was won by Philippa James. Conservative hold.
  • Lancaster: The byelection in Carnforth and Millhead ward held on 25 November was won by Luke Taylor. Labour regain a seat lost when the previous councillor left the party.
  • Newcastle-under-Lyme: The byelection in Knutton ward held on 25 November was won by Derrick Huckfield. Conservative gain from Labour.
  • Nuneaton and Bedworth: The byelection in Bar Pool ward held on 25 November was won by Jamie Hartshorn. Conservative gain from Labour.
  • Tunbridge Wells: The byelection in Speldhurst and Bidborough ward held on 25 November was won by Matthew Sankey. Tunbridge Wells Alliance gain from Conservative. The result may endanger the Conservative minority administration.
  • Wandsworth: The byelection in Bedford ward held on 25 November was won by Sheila Boswell. Labour hold by a majority of one vote.
  • West Suffolk: The byelection in Horringer ward held on 25 November was won by Nicholas Wiseman. Conservative hold.
  • Wigan: The byelection in Bryn ward held on 25 November was won by Samuel Flemming. Labour gain from Independent.
  • Wirral: The byelection in Oxton ward held on 25 November was won by Orod Osanlou. Liberal Democrat hold.

New vacancies

  • Ashford: Highfield ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Gerald White. Term ends 2023.
  • Birmingham: Stockland Green ward, after the death of Labour councillor Penny Holbrook. As her term was due to end in May, she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Camden: Camden Town with Primrose Hill ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Lazzaro Pietragnoli who was unveiled as the author of a secret Twitter account. His term was due to end in May so no byelection will be held.
  • Essex: Rayleigh North division, after the death of Liberal Democrat county councillor Craig Cannell. Term ends 2025.
  • Moray: Elgin City North ward, after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Paula Coy. Her term was due to end in May so there will be no byelection.
  • Rochford: Downhall and Rawreth ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat county councillor Craig Cannell. Term ends 2023.
  • Wealden: Hailsham South ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Kevin Balsdon. Term ends 2023.

Dates for byelections

  • Ashford: The byelection due in Highfield ward will be held on 16 December.
  • East Lothian: The byelection due in Preston, Seton and Gosford ward will be held on 20 January 2022.
  • Gedling: The byelection due in Cavendish ward will be held on 6 January 2022.

Other updates

  • Renfrewshire: The much-delayed byelection in Paisley Southeast ward, which had been called for 14 December, has now been cancelled. Disqualified councillor Paul Mack has lodged a further appeal with the Court of Session and on legal advice the Returning Officer has concluded that the byelection cannot proceed.
