The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Results
- Blackpool: The byelection in Greenlands ward held on 18 December was won by Jonathan Morgan. Reform UK gain from Labour.
- Cornwall: The byelection in St Columb Minor and Colan division held on 18 December was won by Heinz Glanville. Reform UK regain a seat lost when the previous councillor left the party.
- Harborough: The byelection in Market Harborough Logan ward held on 18 December was won by David Page. Conservative gain from Liberal Democrat.
- South Ribble: The byelection in Broad Oak ward held on 18 December was won by Clare Burton-Johnson. Liberal Democrat hold.
- Suffolk: The byelection in Pakefield division held on 18 December was won by June Mummery. Reform UK gain from Conservative.
Defections
- Argyll and Bute: Julie McKenzie, who was elected for the Scottish National Party in Oban North and Lorn ward, has left the party and will sit as an Independent councillor.
- Brent: A group of five councillors from the Labour group have joined the Green Party. They are Mary Mitchell and Harbi Farah (both Welsh Harp ward), Erica Gbajumo (Brondesbury Park ward), Tony Ethapemi (Stonebridge ward), and Iman Ahmadi Moghaddam (Wembley Park ward).
- Hounslow: Karamat Malik, who was elected for the Labour Party in Heston West ward, has joined the Conservatives.
- Lancashire: Sohail Asghar, who was elected for the Green Party in Accrington West and Oswaldtwistle Central division, has given up the party whip during a police investigation, but will remain in the Progressive Lancashire group.
- Lewes: Ciarron Clarkson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Peacehaven North ward but left the party in June last year, has now joined the Green Party.
- Newport: David Mayer, who was elected for the Labour Party in Malpas ward but left the party in April, has now joined the Green Party.
- North Yorkshire: Mike Schofield, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Harlow and St George’s division but left the party in 2023, has joined the Green Party.
- Rushcliffe: Andy Edyvean, who was elected for the Conservatives in Bunny ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor. Meanwhile Elena Georgiou (Bingham South ward), who had left the Conservatives to sit as a Bingham Independent, has returned to the party.
- Surrey Heath: John Skipper, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Heatherside ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Windsor and Maidenhead: Geoff Hill, who was elected as an Independent councillor for Oldfield ward and had been in the ‘Local Independents’ group, has joined the Liberal Democrats.
New vacancies
- Barnsley: Rockingham ward, after the resignation (due on 31 December) of Independent councillor David White who was elected as a Conservative and also spent some time in Reform UK. As his term was due to end next May no byelection follows.
- Durham: Murton division, after the resignation of Reform UK councillor David Cumming. Term ends 2029.
- North Lincolnshire: Brumby ward, after the death of Labour councillor Sue Armitage. Term ends 2027.
- Peterborough: Fletton and Woodston ward, after the death of Labour councillor Nick Thulbourn. Term ends 2027.
- South Cambridgeshire: Milton and Waterbeach ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Judith Rippeth. Her term would have ended in May so she will not be replaced.
Date for byelection
- Pembrokeshire: The byelection due in Fishguard North East ward will be held on Tuesday 10 February.
Other updates
- The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has written to 64 councils with elections due in May 2026 who are subject to possible local government reorganisation, to allow them to request postponement of the election.
