The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Results
- Barnsley: The byelection in Penistone East ward held on 20 August was won by John Roberts. Labour gain from Reform UK.
- Cumberland: The byelection in Harraby South ward held on 20 August was won by Josh Kirkwood. Reform UK gain from Labour.
- Huntingdonshire: The byelection in St Neots Eynesbury ward held on 20 August was won by Ian Taylor. Liberal Democrat gain from Reform UK.
- Nottingham: The byelection in Leen Valley ward held on 20 August was won by Abbas Hussain. Labour regain a seat lost when the previous councillor left the party.
Defections
- Brighton and Hove: Birgit Miller, who was elected for the Labour Party in Goldsmid ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Cambridgeshire: Des Watt, who was elected for Reform UK in Yaxley and Farcet division, has rejoined the Conservative Party.
- Durham: Jack McGlenen, who was elected for Reform UK in Dalton and Dawdon division but was expelled last September, has joined the Social Democratic Party. Meanwhile Ian Catchpole, who was elected for Reform UK in Sedgefield division, has left the party to sit as an ungrouped councillor.
- East Riding of Yorkshire: There have been several changes in group. Amanda Talbot, elected for the Conservatives in Mid Holderness ward, has joined a People Not Party group founded by Independent councillors David Howard (Howden ward) and David Nolan (Hessle ward). Meanwhile Tim Norman, who was elected for the Yorkshire Party in Bridlington South ward but joined the Green Party in July 2025, has now joined the Independent group. His ward colleague Rick Arrand, who was reported to have joined the Green Party, has instead been sitting as an Independent in the Liberal Democrat group.
- Luton: David Franks, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Barnfield ward, has left the party over its nomination of a Reform UK councillor for a committee post.
- North Tyneside: Rebecca O’Keefe, who was elected for the Labour Party in Chirton and Percy Main ward, has had the whip suspended after casting a dissenting vote.
- Sheffield: Robert Hanson, who was elected for Reform UK in Firth Park ward, has left the party group as he has been discovered not to be a party member.
New vacancies
- Aberdeen: Midstocket / Rosemount ward, after the death of Scottish National Party councillor Bill Cormie. Term ends 2027.
- Argyll and Bute: Mid Argyll ward, after the death of Argyll First councillor Dougie Philand. Term ends 2027.
- Leicestershire: Shepshed division, after the resignation of Reform UK county councillor Helen Butler. Term ends 2029.
- Northumberland: Hirst division, after the disqualification of Independent councillor John Allen, who failed to attend any meetings for six months. He was elected for Reform UK. Term ends 2029.
Dates for byelections
- Cotswold: The byelection due in Blockley ward will be held on 24 September.
- Northumberland: The byelection due in Hirst division will be held on 1 October.
- Tunbridge Wells: The byelection due in Cranbrook, Sissinghurst and Frittenden ward will be held on Wednesday 23 September.
- Windsor and Maidenhead: The byelection due in Bray ward will be held on 24 September.
Other updates
- Oldham: At an emergency full council meeting on Thursday, summoned by the Monitoring Officer because of the lack of a council Leader since the May council elections, the council failed for the fifth time to elect a leader. The Monitoring Officer will now write to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and it is likely that Commissioners will be appointed.
