Changes of allegiance
- Aberdeenshire: Jeff Hutchison, who was elected for the Conservatives but left the party in June and was in the Aligned Independent group, has now returned to the Conservatives.
- Blaenau Gwent: Mark Holland, who was elected in Six Bells division as an Independent candidate, has left the Independent group and is sitting as a non-aligned councillor.
- Conwy: Ronnie Hughes (Tudno division) and Mike Priestley (Marl division) have both left the Labour Party group in protest at the group leader deposing a committee chair. Both are now non-aligned councillors.
- Maldon: Karl Jarvis, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Wickham Bishops and Woodham ward, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned councillor.
- Redcar and Cleveland: The two councillors elected for the UK Independence Party have left the party and are sitting as Independents. They are Christopher Gallacher (Normanby ward) and Michael Lockwood (Kirkleatham ward).
- Renfrewshire: Andy Doig, who was elected as an Independent in Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch ward, has formed Scotia Future as a new political party.
- Rotherham: Kerry Albiston (Valley ward) and Ian Jones (Rotherham West ward) have left the Labour Party to sit as Independent councillors.
- Tendring: Peter Harris, who was elected for the Foundation Party in Weeley and Tendring ward, has joined the Conservative Party. Two councillors elected for the UK Independence Party, Mary Newton (Bluehouse ward) and Alex Porter (Coppins ward), have also joined the Conservatives.
New vacancies
- Cambridge: King’s Hedges ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Kevin Price. No byelection will be held as his term was to have ended next May.
- Exeter: Mincinglake and Whipton ward, after the death of Labour councillor Judy Pattison. Term ends 2022.
- Renfrewshire: Paisley South East ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Paul Mack. Term ends 2022.
- St Helens: Earlestown ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Pam Howard who was elected for the Labour Party. Term ends 2023.
- Sandwell: Rowley ward, after the death of Labour councillor Chris Tranter. Term ends 2022.
- Tendring: West Clacton and Jaywick Sands ward, after the resignation of UK Independence Party councillor Nicola Overton. Term ends 2023.
Dates for byelections
- In England, all current vacancies which do not fill a term ending in 2021 will be held on 6 May 2021, the ordinary day for local elections. The Cabinet Office has confirmed that local elections teams should not plan on this date being brought forward. In Wales, all byelections will be held in a period between 1 February and 16 April 2021.
- Argyll and Bute: The byelection due in Helensburgh and Lomond South ward will be held on 18 March 2021.
- West Lothian: The byelection due in Livingston South ward will be held on 11 March 2021.
