Independents take to the Hills

The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Ealing: The byelection in Hobbayne ward held on 16 September was won by Claire Tighe. Labour hold.
  • Malvern Hills: The byelection in Tenbury ward held on 16 September was won by Lesley Bruton. Independent gain from Conservative.
  • Middlesbrough: The byelection in Ladgate ward held on 16 September was won by Tony Grainge. He is allied with the Middlesbrough Independent Group as was the previous councillor (although she had been elected for Labour).
  • Sheffield: The byelection in Firth Park ward held on 16 September was won by Fran Belbin. Labour hold.

New vacancies

  • Cardiff: Heath division, following the impending resignation of Heath and Birchgrove Independent councillor Fenella Bowden. Term ends May next year.
  • Charnwood: Shepshed West ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Joan Tassell. Term ends 2023.
  • Halton: Halton Castle ward, after the death of Labour councillor Harry Howard. Term ends 2024.
  • Lancaster: Carnforth and Millhead ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor John Reynolds, who was elected for Labour. Term ends 2023.
  • South Kesteven: Grantham Arnoldfield ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Helen Goral. Term ends 2023.
  • South Staffordshire: Wombourne South East ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Reg Williams. Term ends 2023.
  • West Lancashire: North Meols ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Tom Blane. Term ends 2023.

Dates for byelections

  • Birmingham: The byelection due in Yardley East will be held on 21 October.
  • Charnwood: The byelection due in Shepshed West ward will be held on 23 September.
  • Newark and Sherwood: The byelection due in Rainworth South and Blidworth ward will be held on 21 October.
  • South Kesteven: The byelection due in Grantham Arnoldfield ward will be held on 28 October.
  • South Kesteven: The byelection due in Stamford All Saints ward will be held on 28 October.

Other updates

  • Aberdeen: The nine councillors elected for Labour on Aberdeen city council have been allowed to stand for reselection at the 2022 local elections. Each member of the group was suspended in 2017 when they formed a coalition administration with the Conservatives, against Scottish Labour policy, and while eligible to be reselected they remain outside the party.
  • Ryedale: Following the death of the council leader, a new administration has been formed by the Liberal Democrats and Independents.
