Rural north Yorkshire district, covering most of the North York Moors. Few large towns: Pickering and Malton in the south, Kirkbymoorside in the north.

The council is to be abolished on 1 April 2023 and replaced by North Yorkshire council. Ampleforth, Rillington, Sherburn and Thornton Dale have vacant seats (held by a Conservative, another Conservative, the Ryedale First Independents and a further Conservative, respectively). William Oxley (Thornton Dale) moved from Conservative to ungrouped Independent in May 2022. Caroline Goodrick (Ryedale South West) moved from Conservative to Independent ungrouped in February 2022.
