The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Changes of allegiance

New vacancies

  • Brighton and Hove: Hollingdean and Stanmer ward, after the impending resignation of Labour councillor Tracey Hill. Term ends 2023.
  • Broxtowe: Stapleford South West ward, after the death of Labour councillor Ray Darby. Term ends 2023.
  • Dartford: Darenth ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Ian Armitt. Term ends 2023.
  • Calderdale Greetland and Stainland ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Marilyn Greenwood. Term ends 2022.
  • Carlisle: Cathedral and Castle ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Christopher Robinson. His term was extended to May and no byelection will follow.
  • Carlisle: Newtown and Morton North ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Calvin Rodgerson. His term also was extended to May and no byelection will follow.
  • Chorley: Coppull ward, after the resignation of Labour counicllor Jane Fitsimons. Her term was due to end in 2020 but was extended, so she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • East Northamptonshire: Kings Forest ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Roger Glithero. His term would have ended when the authority is abolished at the end of March.
  • East Northamptonshire: Rushden Sartoris ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Ron Pinnock. The authority will be abolished at the end of March, so no byelection will be held.
  • Epping Forest: Buckhurst Hill West ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Gavin Chambers. His term was extended to May, so no byelection will be held.
  • Ipswich: Holywells ward, after the resignation of the Mayor of Ipswich, Jan Parry, who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2022.
  • Maidstone: Marden and Yalding ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Steve McLoughlin. His term had been extended to May, so no byelection will be held.
  • Milton Keynes: Woughton and Fishermead ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Shammi Akter, following a criminal conviction. Term ends 2022.
  • Monmouthshire: St Kingsmark division, after the death of Conservative councillor David Dovey. Term ends 2022.
  • North Norfolk: Holt ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Duncan Baker, now Member of Parliament for North Norfolk. Term ends 2023.
  • Reigate and Banstead: Earlswood and Whitebushes ward, after the resignation of Green Party councillor Hal Brown. Term ends 2023.
  • Stevenage: Roebuck ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Sarah-Jane Potter. Term ends 2022.
  • Sunderland: Copt Hill ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Jack Cunningham. Term ends 2022.
  • Sunderland: Shiney Row ward, after the death of Labour councillor Geoff Walker. Term ends 2023.
  • Surrey: Guildford East division, after the disqualification of Conservative county councillor Graham Ellwood who did not attend any council meetings in six months. His term would have ended in May so no byelection will be held.
  • Test Valley: Andover Millway ward, after the resignation of Andover Alliance councillor Alison Watts. Term ends 2023.
  • Thanet: Dane Valley ward, after the resignation of Thanet Independents councillor Gary Taylor. Term ends 2023.
  • Wolverhampton: Blakenhall ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor John Rowley. His term was extended to May so no byelection will be held.
  • Wolverhampton: Bushbury North ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Hazel Malcolm. She had her term extended to May and will not be replaced in a byelection.

Dates for byelections

  • In England, all current vacancies which do not fill a term ending in 2021 will be held on 6 May 2021, the ordinary day for local elections. The Cabinet Office has confirmed that local elections teams should not plan on this date being brought forward. Regulations in Wales will require outstanding byelections to be held in a period between 1 March and 16 April 2021.
  • Denbighshire: The byelection due in Corwen division will be held on 18 March.
  • Isle of Anglesey: The byelection due in Caergybi division will be held on 6 May.
  • Isle of Anglesey: The byelection due in Seiriol division will be held on 6 May.

Other updates

  • The government has confirmed that local elections will definitely go ahead on 6 May, and has published a delivery plan to show how they can be made COVID-safe.
  • Croydon: The council has decided to go ahead with a referendum on a directly elected Mayor on 7 October, rather than in May as urged by the Local Government minister.
