Battledown is joined in Cheltenham

The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Cheltenham: The byelection in Battledown ward held on 9 February was won by Ed Chidley. Liberal Democrat gain from Conservative.
  • Dartford: The byelection in Wilmington, Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley ward held on 9 February was won by Eddy Lampkin. Conservative hold.
  • Denbighshire: The byelection in Rhyl Ty Newydd ward held on 9 February was won by Brian Jones, who returns to the council a year after losing his seat. Conservative gain from Labour.
  • Hertfordshire: The byelection in Hitchin North division held on 9 February was won by Ian Albert. Labour hold.
  • North Yorkshire: The byelection in Masham and Fountains division held on 9 February was won by Felicity Cunliffe-Lister. Liberal Democrat gain from Conservative.

Changes of allegiance

  • Amber Valley: A new Belper Independents group has been set up by Fay Atkinson (Belper East ward) and Ben Bellamy (Belper North ward), both of whom were originally elected for the Labour Party but left it last year.
  • Fenland: John Clark, a former council leader elected for the Conservatives in March East ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor. It is also noted that Jason Mockett (Lattersey ward), who left the Conservatives in October, has now returned.
  • Gloucester: Brendon O’Donnell, who was elected for the Conservatives in Matson, Robinswood and White Cityward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Liverpool: Following exposure of a scandal in which councillors could get parking fines cancelled, Joanne Calvert has left the group to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Preston: Ismail Bax, who was elected for the Labour Party in Deepdale ward, has left the party and is now classified as ‘Other’ on the council website.

New vacancies

  • Essex: Laindon Park and Fryerns division, after the resignation of Labour councillor Adele Brown. Term ends 2025.
  • Kirklees: Ashbrow ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Fran Perry. Term ends 2026.
  • City of London: Castle Baynard ward, after the resignation of Common Councilman Martha Grekos who was a non-partisan on the council, but was the sole ward member elected without the endorsement of the Castle Baynards Independents Party. Term ends 2025.
  • Newcastle upon Tyne: Chapel ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Graham Middleton. His term was due to end in May so no byelection follows.
  • Redditch: Crabbs Cross ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Gareth Prosser. His term would have ended in May so he will not be replaced.

Other updates

  • Birmingham: The Commissioner has allowed the election petition brought against the election of two Liberal Democrat councillors in Aston ward to be withdrawn, and reported his concerns about the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
