The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Local government reform
- Buckinghamshire: Despite the coronavirus emergency, local government reform went ahead in Buckinghamshire this week. The four previous districts of Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe and the county council have been abolished and replaced by a new unitary county. It had been intended to hold elections in May but they have been postponed to 2021, and an interim council formed by all individual members of the previous authorities will run things until then.
Changes of allegiance
- Derby: Dom Anderson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Boulton ward but left the party in February 2019, has now joined the Conservative Party.
- Gateshead: John McClurey, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Whickham South and Sunniside ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor. He is the father of Kevin McClurey who made the same move last week.
New vacancies
- Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole: Commons ward, after the death of Christchurch Independents councillor Colin Bungey. Term ends 2023.
- Essex: Rochford North division, after the death of Conservative county councillor Terry Cutmore. Term ends 2022.
- Hyndburn: Barnfield ward, after the death of the Conservative group leader Tony Dobson. Term ends 2021.
- Rochford: Hockley and Ashingdon ward, after the death of Conservative councillor and former council leader Terry Cutmore. Term ends 2022.
- Rushmoor: North Town ward, after the death of Labour councillor and Mayor-elect Frank Rust. Term ends 2022.
- Sheffield: Manor Castle ward, after the death of veteran Labour councillor Pat Midgley. Term ends 2021.
Dates for byelections
- All byelections have been stopped. Under s. 61 of the Coronavirus Act, they cannot be held until the Secretary of State specifies a date.
Other updates
- Brent: The two Conservatives defeated in a byelection in Barnhill ward on 23 January have lodged an election petition for a recount, claiming the count staff may have made an error during the count.
