Labour gets a Dunkin in Gedling

The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Result

  • Gedling: The byelection in Cavendish ward held on 6 January was won by Andrew Dunkin. Liberal Democrat gain from Labour.

Changes of allegiance

  • Bury: Gareth Staples-Jones, who was elected for Radcliffe First in Radcliffe West ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Cornwall: Peter La Broy, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Bude division, has left the party to join the Independent group.
  • Herefordshire: It is noted that the Herefordshire Independent and It’s Our County groups, who form the ruling coalition, have formed a united Independents for Herefordshire group on the council.
  • Maidstone: Nick de Wiggondene-Sheppard, who was elected for the Conservatives in Detling and Thurnham ward but left to join the Liberal Democrats in October 2020, has now left the Liberal Democrats to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • South Somerset: Crispin Raikes, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in South Petherton ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Test Valley: The Andover Independents Party has disbanded. Two of their three councillors are now sitting as Independents: Victoria Harber (Andover St Mary’s ward) and Rebecca Meyer (Andover Winton ward). The third, Christopher Ecclestone (Andover Millway ward), has joined the Liberal Party.
  • West Lancashire: Ron Cooper, who was elected for the Labour Party in Tanhouse ward, has has had the Labour whip suspended and is currently sitting as an Independent councillor over controversial tweets.

New vacancies

  • Allerdale: Stainburn and Clifton ward, after the disqualification of Allerdale Independent councillor Janet King, who failed to attend any meetings in six months. Term ends 2023.
  • Bromley: Shortlands ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Mary Cooke. Her term was due to end in May so there will be no byelection.
  • Derbyshire Dales: Carsington Water ward, after the death of veteran Conservative councillor and former council leader Lewis Rose. Term ends 2023.
  • Eastleigh: Eastleigh Central ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Jephthe Doguie. Term ends 2023.
  • Herefordshire: Bromyard West ward, after the resignation of Independents for Herefordshire councillor Alan Seldon, who is moving out of the area. Term ends 2023.
  • Ipswich: Bridge ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Collette Allen for personal health reasons. Her term was due to end in so no byelection will be held.
  • Maldon: Wickham Bishops and Woodham ward, after the resignation of non-aligned councillor Karl Jarvis, who was elected for the Conservatives. Term ends 2023.
  • Manchester: Crumpsall ward, after the resignation of former council leader and Labour councillor Sir Richard Leese. As his term would have ended in May, no byelection will follow.
  • Oadby and Wigston: Wigston Meadowcourt ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Robert Eaton. Term ends 2023.
  • Powys: Gwernyfed division, after the resignation of Conservative councillor James Evans, now Member of the Senedd for Brecon and Radnorshire. His term would have ended in May so he will not be replaced.
  • Spelthorne: Stanwell North ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jim McIlroy. Term ends 2023.
  • Trafford: Bowdon ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Karen Barclay. Her term was due to end in May so no byelection will ensue.

Dates for byelections

  • Eastleigh: The byelection due in Eastleigh Central ward will be held on 10 February.
  • Newark and Sherwood: The byelection due in Collingham ward will be held on 17 February.
  • Nottinghamshire: The byelection due in Collingham division will be held on 17 February.
  • Somerset West and Taunton: The byelection due in Alcombe ward will be held on 10 February.
  • Wealden: The byelection due in Hailsham South ward will be held on 10 February.
