The government proposes to merge the council with Basildon to create a new unitary South West Essex council in 2027. The scheduled 2025 elections were postponed to 2026. The Government has appointed commissioners to guide the council. Tom Kelly (Little Thurrock Rectory) moved from Conservative to Reform UK in March 2026.
