The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Changes of allegiance

New vacancies

  • Blackburn with Darwen: Livesey with Pleasington ward, after the death of Conservative councillor John Pearson. His term was extended to May next year; no byelection for a replacement will take place.
  • Chorley: Clayton-le-Woods and Whittle-le-Woods ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Eric Bell. His term was extended to May next year so he will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Northampton: New Duston ward, after the death of Conservative councillor John Caswell. His term was due to end when the authority is abolished next year so no byelection ensues.
  • Northamptonshire: Towcester and Roade division, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Adil Sadygov. His term would have ended with the abolition of the authority next year; no byelection will be held.
  • South Northamptonshire: Grange Park ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Adil Sadygov. His term would have ended with the abolition of the authority next year; there will be no byelection.
  • Warwickshire: Nuneaton Abbey division, after the death of Labour councillor and former MP Bill Olner. No byelection will happen as his term would have ended in May next year.

Dates for byelections

  • In England, all current vacancies which do not fill a term ending in 2021 will be held on 6 May 2021, the ordinary day for local elections. In Wales, all byelections will be held in a period between 1 February and 16 April 2021.

Other updates

  • East Devon: The cabinet made up of members of the Independent Group has resigned, noting that the Democratic Alliance Group (consisting of the East Devon Alliance, Liberal Democrats, Green Party and Independent Progressive groups) is capable of forming a majority. An extraordinary meeting of the council has been called for Thursday 28 May (and will be held virtually).
