Independent Group 3, non-aligned 3. West Kent port town, with the economy based around the docks; previously a mining area. The Royal Marines are based in the separate town of Deal in this borough.

The government proposes to merge the council with Canterbury and Thanet to create a unitary East Kent council in 2027. Guston, Kingsdown and St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe has a byelection on 27 August (held by the Conservatives).
