The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Results
- Cambridgeshire: The byelection in Wisbech South division was won by Samantha Hoy. Conservative gain from an Independent who had been elected for the UK Independence Party.
- Kettering: The postponed election for three seats in Rothwell ward held on 4 June was won by Alan Mills (Labour), Karl Sumpter (Conservative) and Margaret Talbot (Conservative). This is no change in terms of party composition, but sitting Conservative councillor Ian Jelley has lost his seat.
Changes of allegiance
- Highland: Jaci Douglas, who was elected as an Independent councillor for Badenoch and Strathspey ward, has left the Independent group to sit as a non-aligned councillor.
- Newcastle-Under-Lyme: David Stringer, who was elected for Labour in Ravenscliffe ward but left the party last week, has now joined the Liberal Democrats.
- Tendring: This week saw a return to the fold by four of the nine councillors who were elected for the UK Independence Party but formed the breakaway ‘Tendring UKIP’ group last week. The five remaining ‘Tendring UKIP’ members have now had their membership suspended by party headquarters.
New vacancies
- Barnsley: Dearne North ward, after the death of Labour councillor Dave Sim. Term ends 2018.
- Caerphilly: Cross Keys division, after the resignation of Labour councillor Michael Gray. Term ends 2017.
- Hounslow: Brentford ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Ruth Cadbury, now Member of Parliament for Brentford and Isleworth. Term ends 2018.
- North East Lincolnshire: Croft Baker ward, after the death of the deputy leader of the council, Labour councillor Mick Burnett. Term ends 2019.
- Tendring: Rush Green ward, after the resignation of UK Independence Party councillor Len Sibbald (who had been briefly part of the ‘Tendring UKIP’ breakaway group). Term ends 2019.
- Tunbridge Wells: Southborough North ward, after the death of Conservative councillor and former Mayor Mike Rusbridge. Term ends 2018.
- Wychavon: Droitwich East ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Glenise Noyes. Term ends 2019.
Dates for byelections
- Hounslow: The byelection due in Brentford ward will take place on 9 July.
- Hyndburn: The byelection due in Spring Hill ward will take place on 9 July.
- Norfolk: The byelection due in Mile Cross division will be held on 16 July.
Other news
- Birmingham: An election petition has been lodged, challenging the result of the May election in Washwood Heath ward. The petition alleges spiritual intimidation.
- Bournemouth: An election petition has been lodged, challenging the result of the May election in Kinson South ward. The petition is prompted by confusion at the start of polling day when ballot papers intended for Kinson North ward were sent to polling stations in Kinson South ward, and vice versa.
- Walsall: The Labour administration were voted out at the annual meeting, and a Conservative leader was elected. The council will be run as a minority Conservative administration.
