Bocking impressive gain for Essex Tories

The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Brent: The byelection in Kenton ward on 5 March was won by Michael Maurice. Conservative hold.
  • Camden: The byelection in St Pancras and Somers Town ward on 5 March was won by Paul Tomlinson. Labour hold.
  • Croydon: The byelection in Selhurst ward on 5 March was won by David Wood. Labour hold.
  • Essex: The byelection in Bocking division on 5 March was won by Stephen Canning. Conservative gain from UK Independence Party.

Changes of allegiance

New vacancies

  • Flintshire: Caergwrle division, after the death of Labour councillor Stella Jones. Term ends 2017.
  • Forest of Dean: Coleford East ward, after the disqualification of Labour councillor Tanya Palmer who has not attended any meeting of the council in six months (due to serious illness). As her term would end in May, there will be no byelection to replace her.
  • Kensington and Chelsea: Stanley ward, after the impending resignation of Conservative councillor and forner leader Sir Merrick Cockell, who is to be chair of the municipal bonds agency Local Capital Finance Company. Term ends 2018.
  • Leicestershire: Narborough and Whetstone division, after the resignation of Conservative county councillor Karl Coles due to pressure of business. Term ends 2017.
  • Melton: Melton Warwick ward, after the resignation of Independent councillor Norman Slater due to ill health. Slater was elected as a Conservative but had been suspended from his group when he was charged with theft. As his term would have ended in May, there will be no byelection.
  • Middlesbrough: Stainton and Thornton ward, after the death of the only Liberal Democrat councillor, Maelor Williams. As his term was due to end in May, there will be no byelection.
  • Rossendale: Longholme ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Peter Roberts who is opposed to plans for a new bus station in Rawtenstall. His term was up in May so he will not be replaced.
  • Westminster: Warwick ward, after the impending resignation of Conservative councillor Ed Argar, who has been selected as Parliamentary candidate for Charnwood.
