This week’s round of byelections were bad news for the Conservatives. In Worcester city council‘s St Clements ward, Labour gained the seat and thereby deprived the Conservatives of an overall majority on the council. Labour also secured a morale-boosting gain from the Conservatives in the Brandwood ward of Birmingham city council, and won Abbey ward of Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council from the Liberal Democrats. Labour defended seats at Harbour ward of Copeland borough council, Wigan West ward of Wigan borough council and Moriah ward of Caerphilly county borough council.

The Conservatives also lost Shoeburyness ward of Southend-on-Sea borough council to an Independent challenger. However, they were able to gain Pembroke St Michael’s ward in Pembrokeshire county council from the Liberal Democrats.
