Labour gained a seat in Slough ward, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, in byelections held on the day after Gordon Brown became Prime Minister. The party also defended a seat at Whaddon, Milton Keynes Borough Council.

The Conservatives did get the satisfaction of regaining a seat at Charlemont with Grove Vale ward, Sandwell Borough council, where their former councillor Alan Burkitt had left the party before being disqualified after a criminal conviction. The Liberal Democrats held two seats in the north-west, in Craven ward of Pendle Borough council and in Tyldesley ward of Wigan Borough council.
