Forthcoming byelections

The following byelections are known about. Now incorporating corrections!

5 July

  • Higham Ferrers Lancaster (East Northamptonshire District Council), caused by the death of Barry Sauntson, a Conservative. On what is the most Conservative council in the country (the Conservatives hold all but one seat), the Conservative candidate Pam Whiting was the only candidate nominated and has therefore held the seat in an unopposed election. She will serve until 2011.
  • Saddleworth West and Lees (Oldham Borough Council), caused by the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Tom Beeley. The winner serves until 2010.

12 July

  • Hanworth Park (Hounsloe Borough Council), caused by the resignation of Harley Buckner (Conservative). The term runs to 2010.
  • Haverstock (Camden Borough Council), caused by the resignation of Roy Shaw (Labour). The term runs to 2010.
  • Heronwood (Rushmoor Borough Council), caused by the resignation of Peter Sandy. He had been elected as a Liberal Democrat but been sitting as an Independent at his resignation. His term ran until May 2008.
  • Keele and Westlands (Staffordshire Borough Council), caused by the death of Glennis Deakin (Conservative). The term runs to 2009.
  • Maidstone North East (Kent County Council), caused by the death of Margaret Featherstone (Liberal Democrat). The winner will serve until May 2009.
  • Valley (Rotherham Borough Council), caused by the death of Labour councillor Paddy Burke. The term runs to May 2008.
  • Westlands (Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council), caused by the death of Glennis Deakin (Conservative). The term runs to 2010.

19 July

  • Castle Hill (Ipswich Borough Council), caused by the disqualification of Dale Jackson. A former Leader of the Council, Jackson had been sitting as an Independent although he was elected as a Conservative; he was disqualified for failing to attend a meeting of the council or its committees for six months. The winner will serve to 2008.
  • Cleveland (Ealing Borough Council), caused by the death of Conservative councillor Brian Castle. His term ran until May 2010.
  • Llansamlet (Swansea County Borough Council), caused by the resignation of Lawrence Bailey (Labour). The term runs to 2008.

26 July

  • Welshpool Gungrog (Powys County Council), caused by the death of Mervyn Kinsey (Liberal Democrat). The term runs to May 2008.
