Herefordshire goes all Wonky

Pursuant to the Local Elections (Ordinary Day of Elections in 2014) Order 2013 (2013 No. 2277), article 4, today is the date from which casual vacancies in the office of a councillor who would have ordinarily have retired in 2014 will not be filled in a byelection.

The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East of England

East Midlands

London

  • Brent borough council: Impending vacancy in Dudden Hill ward where Liberal Democrat councillor Rev David Clues has said he is intending to resign in November (within six months of a full council election). He has been living and working in Brighton since December 2011.
  • Lambeth borough council: Byelection on 28 November in Vassall ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Kingsley Abrams, who is devoting his time to the Parliamentary selection in Brent Central. Term ends May next year.

North East

  • No updates this week.

North West

South East

  • Bracknell Forest council: Byelection on 28 November in Winkfield and Cranbourne ward after the death of Conservative councillor Mary Ballin, who was executive member for planning and transport. Term ends 2015.
  • Dartford borough council: Byelection on 5 December in Swanscombe ward after the death of Swanscombe Residents Association councillor Leslie Bobby. Term ends 2015.
  • Mid Sussex district council: Byelection on 19 December in Haywards Heath Franklands ward after the death of Conservative councillor John de Mierre. Term ends 2015.
  • South Bucks district council: Byelection on 12 December in Iver Village and Richings Park ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Alan Oxley, who was the only member of his party on the council. Term ends 2015.
  • Tonbridge and Malling district council: Byelection on 9 January 2014 in Borough Green and Long Mill ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Evans. Term ends 2015.
  • West Sussex county council: Byelection on 19 December in Haywards Heath East division after the death of Conservative county councillor John de Mierre. Term ends 2017.

South West

  • Wiltshire council: Vacancy in Ethandune division after the death of Conservative councillor Linda Conley, who was portfolio holder for waste. Term ends 2017.

West Midlands

  • Herefordshire council: Jon Norris, known as ‘Wizard Wonky’, was elected councillor for Pontrilas ward on 21 November. He gains for the ‘It’s OUR County’ group a seat previously held by the Conservatives, and as a result the Conservatives no longer have an overall majority on the council. Meanwhile it should be recorded that Chris Chappell, who was elected for the Labour Party in St Martins and Hinton ward, has left the party and joined the Herefordshire Indepedendents.
  • Lichfield district council: Vacancy in Chadsmead ward after the disqualification of Conservative councillor Michael Fryers, who failed to attend any meeting of the council in six months. Term ends 2015.
  • Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council: Byelection on 5 December in Arbury ward after the disqualification of Labour councillor Kevin Young who did not attend any meeting of the council in six months. Term ends May next year.
  • Rugby borough council: James Buckley was elected councillor for Hillmorton ward on 21 November; he held the seat for the Conservatives.
  • Warwickshire county council: Byelection on 12 December in Bedworth West division after the death of Labour county councillor Keith Richardson. Term ends 2017.
  • Wolverhampton city council: Vacancy in Wednesfield North ward after the death of Conservative councillor Neil Clarke. Term ends May next year.

Yorkshire and the Humber

  • Hambleton district council: When nominations closed for the byelection in Topcliffe ward due on 12 December, Garry Key was the only candidate to be nominated, and he has therefore been elected unopposed. This means the Conservatives retain the seat.
  • Kirklees borough council: Christine Iredale was elected councillor for Golcar ward on 21 November, and therefore regains for the Liberal Democrats the seat which she previously lost to the Labour Party.
  • Richmondshire district council: Byelection on 12 December in Hornby Castle ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lin Clarkson, who was elected in a byelection in May 2012. Term ends 2015.
  • Scarborough borough council: Tony Randerson was elected councillor for Eastfield ward on 21 November, gaining for the Labour Party a seat previously held by the Liberal Democrats.
  • Sheffield city council: Vacancy in Arbourthorne ward after the death of Labour councillor John Robson. Term ends 2015.
  • City of Wakefield council: Byelection on 28 November in Horbury and South Ossett ward after the death of the Mayor of Wakefield, Brian Holmes, who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2015.

Wales

Scotland

  • Glasgow city council: Byelection on 5 December in Shettleston ward after the death of Labour councillor George Ryan. Term ends 2017.
  • Highland council: Byelection on 28 November in Landward Caithness ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Alex MacLeod, who has been charged with incurring excessive expenses at his election. There will then be a byelection on 19 December in Black Isle ward after the death of Independent councillor Billy Barclay. Both terms end in 2017.
  • Moray council: Byelection on 30 January 2014 in Buckie ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Anne McKay. Term ends 2017. The current Independent and Conservative administration would lose its overall majority if the new councillor does not support it.
  • North Lanarkshire council: Byelection on 23 January 2014 in Motherwell North ward after the death of Labour councillor Annita McAuley. Term ends 2017.
