The single byelection on 25 June resulted in the Scottish National Party easily holding its seat in Monifieth and Sidlaw ward on Angus council; the party polled 68% of the votes cast so there was no need to look at second preferences.
At its first annual meeting as a new unitary council, Cornwall council has voted in an executive comprising six Conservatives and four Independents; the two groups have agreed a pact to run the council. We also have to report that Diane Park, who was Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Halifax and is a member of Calderdale borough council for Elland ward, has resigned from the Liberal Democrats to sit as an Independent on the council. She says that her heart tells her “I no longer wish to be part of this discredited party political system”.
Also no longer part of a party political system, though not voluntarily, is Mumshad Ahmed, who was elected to Wyre Forest district council as a Conservative in Broadwaters ward. He has had the party whip withdrawn after he was convicted of driving while disqualified and sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for one year. If the jail term had been any longer he would have been disqualified from membership. Ahmed was also recently elected to Worcestershire county council for St Georges and St Oswalds division but we have no information on any disciplinary action there.
