Melcombe Regis gets in the thick of it with Labour

The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

London

  • Harrow borough council: Following last week’s split, the council leader Thaya Idaikkadar has formed a cabinet consisting of five members of the Independent Labour group and two non-voting Conservatives. The Conservative group has declared it is giving him the opportunity to prove himself and will be supporting the administration. Raj Ray (Roxeth ward), who had initially been listed among the members of the Independent Labour group, has decided to remain in the official Labour group, while William Stoodley (West Harrow ward) has moved from the Labour group to join the Independent Labour group; he is now portfolio holder for planning and regeneration.
  • Merton borough council: Simmering tensions within the Conservative group, which have seen two group leaders resign the leadership in the space of two months, broke into the open at the annual meeting of the council. As a result five councillors elected for the Conservative Party have left the party, four during the course of the meeting: Suzanne Evans (Hillside ward), former leader Richard Hilton (Lower Morden ward), and husband and wife Linda Scott and Rod Scott (both Raynes Park ward). They have subsequently been joined in leaving the Conservatives by Chris Edge (Dundonald ward), although it is not clear whether he will join the others in their group. Members of the new group have been invited to join the UK Independence Party and are considering the invitation.

  • Dartford borough council: Vacancy in Newtown ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Gary Reynolds. Term ends 2015.
  • East Sussex county council: Plans for the Conservatives to form a minority administration seem to be on track. The UK Independence Party has denied rumours which had suggested a Conservative/UKIP coalition.
  • Milton Keynes council: Byelection on 20 June in Bletchley and Fenny Stratford ward after the death of Labour councillor Rita Venn. Term ends 2015.
  • Oxfordshire county council: A minority Conservative administration has been formed with the support of the Independent councillors.
  • Southampton city council: Byelection on 13 June in Woolston ward after the resignation of Labour councillor and former council leader Richard Williams, following an inquiry into the reasons why a cabinet member’s resignation was wrongly ascribed to ill health. Term ends 2016.

Wales

  • Pembrokeshire county council: Sue Perkins, who was elected for the Labour Party in Pembroke Dock Llanion division, has joined the Independent Plus group; she was the only Labour member in the otherwise Independent Plus cabinet, so it appears that the remaining Labour group has now gone into opposition. Meanwhile David Bryan, who was elected as an Independent in Haverfordwest Priory division, has joined the Conservative Party. The overall strength of the parties is now Independent Plus 32, Non-affiliated 12, Labour 7, Plaid Cymru 5, Conservatives 3, Liberal Democrat 1.
  • Swansea city council: Vacancy in Llansamlet division after the death of the Lord Mayor, Dennis Jones, who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2017.

Scotland

  • Argyll and Bute council: Following opposition by the Scottish National Party to their council group’s decision to form an administration with the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, the leader of the council has resigned and the coalition deal is off. Discussions about a new administration are underway.
  • Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 20 June in Liberton and Gilmerton ward after the death of Scottish National Party councillor Tom Buchanan. Term ends 2017.
  • Fife council: Byelection on 20 June in Glenrothes North, Leslie and Markinch ward after the death of Labour councillor Bill Kay. Term ends 2017.
