Plaid Cymru win one and lose one

The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

  • Blaby district council: Vacancy in Pastures ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Ted Webster-Williams. Term ends 2015.
  • Corby borough council: Sean Kettle was elected councillor for the East ward on 12 July, holding the seat for the Labour Party.
  • Lincolnshire county council: Byelection on 2 August in Lincoln East division after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sara Cliff, who was under criticism for her poor attendance record since moving to Cambridgeshire. There is also a vacancy in Nettleham and Saxilby division after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Ray Sellars. Both terms end in 2013.
  • South Holland district council: There are two byelections on 2 August. The byelection in Fleet ward is caused by the resignation of Conservative councillor Shaun Keeble; the byelection in Long Sutton ward arises after the death of veteran Independent councillor Dennis Tennant. Both terms end in 2015.
  • West Lindsey district council: Vacancy in Nettleham ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Ray Sellars. Term ends 2015.

East of England

  • Breckland district council: There is a byelection on 19 July in Queen’s ward in Attleborough after the resignation of Conservative councillor Simon Rogers, who has moved to Cornwall; there are another two byelections on 26 July. The first is in Harling and Heathlands ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lady Kay Fisher, whose husband has a financial link with the Crown Estate who are putting forward development plans in the district. The second is in Mid Forest ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Bernard English due to ill health. All terms end in 2015.
  • Central Bedfordshire council: Vacancy in Stotfold and Langford ward after the death of Conservative councillor Jon Clarke. Term ends 2015.
  • Tendring district council: Byelection on 16 August in St Bartholomews ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Chris Cowlin, who was sponsored by the Holland Residents’ Association. He was elected only in March but has found that he cannot fulfil all the duties of a councillor. Term ends 2015.

South East

  • Ashford borough council: Jill Hutchinson was elected councillor for Tenterden South ward on 12 July. She held the seat for the Conservative Party.
  • Dartford borough council: Vacancy in Castle ward after the death of Conservative councillor and former Mayor Sheila East. Term ends 2015.
  • East Hampshire district council: Guy Shepherd was elected councillor for Horndean Downs ward on 12 July. He holds the seat for the Conservative Party.
  • Mole Valley district council: A cabinet has finally been formed for the 2012-13 municipal year. The council had elected Chris Townsend (Independent) as its Leader in May but Townsend’s attempts to form an all-party executive were vetoed by the Liberal Democrats who refused to take seats. Townsend has now appointed a cabinet consisting of Independent and Conservative councillors.
  • New Forest district council: Byelection in Milford ward on 19 July after the resignation of Conservative councillor Michael Pemberton. Term ends 2015.
  • Oxfordshire county council: Gill Sanders was elected county councillor for Cowley and Littlemore division on 12 July, holding the seat for the Labour Party.
  • Wealden district council: Byelection on 2 August in Polegate North ward after the death of veteran Liberal Democrat councillor Roy Martin. Term ends 2015.

South West

  • Cornwall council: Vacancy in St Keverne and Meneage division after the death of Independent councillor Pam Lyne. Term ends 2013.

West Midlands

Yorkshire and the Humber

  • Calderdale borough council: Byelection on 19 July in Warley ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Keith Hutson. Term ends in 2015. There is an impending vacancy in Calder ward as another Liberal Democrat councillor, Nader Fekri, is moving to Turkey to join his wife; his term is due to end in 2014.
  • Sheffield city council: Clive Skelton, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Beauchief and Greenhill ward, and was the chief whip of the Liberal Democrat group, has joined the Labour Party. He has stated that his decision is due to his inability to support the Liberal Democrats nationally.

Wales

  • Bridgend county borough council: Vacancy in Betws division after the death of Labour councillor and former Mayor Christopher Michaelides. Term ends 2017.
  • Isle of Anglesey county council: The two byelections on 12 July resulted in the election of Vaughan Hughes of Plaid Cymru in Llanbedrgoch division, and Independent candidate Alun Mummery in Gwyngyll division. The results mark a Plaid Cymru gain from Independent in Llanbedrgoch, and an Independent gain from Plaid Cymru (who did not nominate a candidate to defend the seat) in Gwyngyll. It is not known whether Alun Mummery will join the Original Independents group, the Llais i Fôn group, or remain unaffiliated.
  • Vale of Glamorgan council: Byelection on 2 August in Buttrills division after the death of former council leader, Mayor and Labour councillor Margaret Alexander. Term ends 2017.
