The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

East of England

  • Breckland district council: Carl Clark, who was elected for the Labour Party in Thetford Abbey ward, announced on Monday that he was leaving the party to sit as an Independent, citing his support for a referendum on British membership of the European Union and criticising the national leadership. He has since said that he will resign his seat to seek re-election as an Independent. There is a byelection on 19 July in Queen’s ward in Attleborough after the resignation of Conservative councillor Simon Rogers, who has moved to Cornwall; there is another byelection on 26 July in Harling and Heathlands ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Lady Kay Fisher, whose husband has a financial link with the Crown Estate who are putting forward development plans in the district. There will also be a vacancy in Mid Forest ward, after the impending resignation of Conservative councillor Bernard English due to ill health. All terms end in 2015.
  • Central Bedfordshire council: Vacancy in Stotfold and Langford ward after the death of Conservative councillor Jon Clarke. Term ends 2015.
  • Chelmsford borough council: Byelection on 28 June in Patching Hall ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Tom Smith-Hughes. Term ends 2015.
  • Dacorum borough council: Rosie Sutton was elected councillor for Woodhall Farm ward on 21 June, holding the seat for the Conservative Party.
  • Essex county council: Byelection on 28 June in Chelmsford North division after the death of the leader of the opposition, Liberal Democrat councillor Tom Smith-Hughes. Term ends 2013.
  • Hertfordshire county council: William Wyatt-Lowe was elected county councillor for Hemel Hempstead Town division on 21 June. He holds the seat for the Conservative Party.
  • Huntingdonshire district council: Robin Carter was elected councillor for Earith ward on 21 June, holding the seat for the Conservative Party.
  • Maldon borough council: Byelection on 5 July in Tollesbury ward after the death of Conservative councillor Russell Porter. Term ends 2015.

London

North East

  • Durham county council: Jimmy Alvey was elected councillor for Peterlee West division on 21 June. He gained the seat for the Labour Party; the Liberal Democrats who previously held the seat polled only 9%.

North West

  • Carlisle city council: Donald Forrester was elected councillor for Harraby ward on 21 June, retaining the seat for the Labour Party.
  • Fylde borough council: Byelection on 5 July in Heyhouses ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Peter Wood. Term ends 2015. His resignation removes, at least temporarily, the Conservative overall majority.
  • Liverpool city council: There are two byelections on 5 July. Allerton and Hunts Cross ward will elect a councillor after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Vera Best, who has since died. Riverside ward will elect the councillor successor of Joe Anderson, the Labour Party group leader, who was elected Mayor in May. Both terms end in 2014.

  • West Devon district council: John Sheldon was elected councillor for Tavistock North ward on 21 June; he holds the seat for the Conservative Party.

West Midlands

Yorkshire and the Humber

  • Calderdale borough council: Byelection on 19 July in Warley ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Keith Hutson. Term ends in 2015. There is an impending vacancy in Calder ward as another Liberal Democrat councillor, Nader Fekri, is moving to Turkey to join his wife; his term is due to end in 2014.
