Post-election roundup

Localcouncils has now been updated for the situation after the ordinary round of local elections. From next week we will check as administrations are formed in councils without majorities. In the meantime, the latest updates on local electoral information not related to the ordinary round of elections are as follows:

Results

  • Corporation of London: Tim Hailes was re-elected as Alderman for Bassishaw ward at the poll on 30 April.
  • Corporation of London: The byelection for a Common Councilman in Cordwainer ward held on 30 April was won by Tracey Graham.
  • Cambridgeshire: The byelection in Trumpington division held on 2 May was won by Barbara Ashwood. The Liberal Democrats regain a seat lost when the former councillor left the party.
  • Dundee: The byelection in North East ward held on 2 May was won by Steven Rome. The Scottish National Party gain a seat from Labour and in doing so have gained an overall majority on the council.
  • Durham: The byelection in Shildon and Dene Valley division held on 2 May was won by Garry Huntington. Liberal Democrat gain from Labour.
  • Durham: The byelection in Spennymoor division held on 2 May was won by Ian Geldard. He stood as an Independent councillor and succeeds a Spennymoor Independent.
  • Gloucestershire: The byelection in Churchdown division held on 2 May was won by Ben Evans. Liberal Democrat hold.
  • Kent: The byelection in Northfleet and Gravesend West division held on 2 May was won by John Burden. Labour hold.
  • Kent: The byelection in Sittingbourne North division held on 2 May was won by Jason Clinch. Swale Independents gain from Conservative.
  • Lewisham: The byelection in Evelyn ward held on 2 May was won by Lionel Openshaw. Labour hold.
  • Lewisham: The byelection in Whitefoot ward held on 2 May was won by Kim Powell. Labour hold.
  • Newcastle-under-Lyme: The byelection in Maer and Whitmore ward held on 2 May was won by Graham Hutton. Conservative hold.
  • Northumberland: The byelection in Holywell division held on 2 May was won by Leslie Bowman. Labour hold.
  • Surrey: The byelection in Haslemere division held on 2 May was won by Nikki Barton. Independent gain from the Conservatives.
  • West Sussex: The byelection in Northgate and West Green division held on 2 May was won by Karen Sudan. Labour hold.

Changes of allegiance

  • Bolton: Debbie Newall, who was elected for the Labour Party in Breightmet ward but left it in November last year, has rejoined the party.
  • Southwark: James Coldwell, who was elected for the Labour Party in Newington ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Swindon: Matthew Courtliff (Lydiard and Freshbrook ward), who announced a move from Labour to Conservative in 2016 but did not go through with it, but did leave Labour to become an Independent councillor in February, has now joined the Conservative group.

New vacancy

  • Wandsworth: Furzedown ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Candida Jones who is taking up a politically restricted post. Term ends 2022.

Postponed polls

  • Forest of Dean: The election in Newent and Taynton ward has been postponed from 2 May to 20 June, following the death of David Humphreys who had been nominated as a Green Party candidate.
  • North Devon: The postponed poll in Chittlehampton ward will take place on 13 June.
  • Salford: The election in Walkden South ward has been postponed from 2 May following the death of George Darlington, who had been nominated as the Conservative Party candidate.
  • South Ribble: The election in Farington West ward has been postponed from 2 May to 20 June following the death of Graham Walton, who had been nominated as the Conservative Party candidate.
