The latest information about other local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Derby city council: Two councillors have defected to the Conservatives. Prem Chera had originally been elected in Sinfin ward for Labour but had left the party and was sitting as an Independent. Frank Harwood was elected in Oakwood ward as a Liberal Democrat. Their moves helped the Conservatives become the largest party and they have formed a minority administration to run the city.
- East Lindsey district council: Byelection on 17 June in North Holme ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Clive Finch. Term ends 2011.
- Leicester city council: Vacancy in Castle ward after the death of Green Party councillor Phil Gordon, who fell from a tree while working as a tree surgeon. Term ends 2011. The ‘Programme for Government‘ document issued on Thursday announces that the Government will follow the Conservative Party’s policy and “create directly elected mayors in the 12 largest English cities, subject to confirmatory referendums”. Leicester is one of the twelve cities.
- Newark and Sherwood district council: Vacancy in Rainhill ward after the death of Labour councillor Allen Tift. Term ends 2011.
- Nottingham city council: The ‘Programme for Government‘ document issued on Thursday announces that the Government will follow the Conservative Party’s policy and “create directly elected mayors in the 12 largest English cities, subject to confirmatory referendums”. Nottingham is one of the twelve cities.
- Wellingborough borough council: Byelection on 17 June in Earls Barton ward, caused by the disqualification of Independent councillor Lucy Payne. Term ends 2011.
East of England
- Bedford borough council: Byelection on 24 June in Kempston North ward after the death of Labour councillor Ray Oliver. Term ends 2011.
- Colchester borough council: The council’s ‘rainbow coalition‘ of Liberal Democrats, Labour and Independents, will continue in office as no party won a majority in this years’ elections.
- Hertfordshire county council: Byelection on 3 June in St Albans South division after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Ellis. Term ends 2013.
- Ipswich borough council: The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats will continue to control the council in coalition for another year after no party won a majority in May.
- North Norfolk district council: Annie Green, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat for Wensum Valley ward, has joined the Conservative Party.
- St Albans district council: Byelection on 3 June in Ashley ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Ellis. Term ends 2012.
- Thurrock borough council: The council will be run by a minority Labour administration for the next year, after Labour obtained the support of dissident ex-Conservative Stuart St. Clair-Haslam and BNP councillor Emma Colgate at the annual meeting.
- Barking and Dagenham borough council: Questions have arisen as to whether Louise Couling, who was elected as a Labour councillor for Goresbrook ward, was disqualified because of her work as a schools patrol officer. However she attended the annual council meeting this week and continues to be listed as a councillor on the council’s website.
- Camden borough council: The election of three councillors for the Haverstock ward will take place on Tuesday 25 May after the death of sitting Liberal Democrat councillor Syed Hoque, who was a candidate for re-election.
- Redbridge borough council: The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have agreed a coalition to take power, following the failure of any party to win an overall majority on 6 May. There is a vacancy in Chadwell ward due to the disqualification of Labour councillor Mark Gittens, who is employed as a science teacher at Wanstead High School and therefore an employee of the council. Term ends 2014.
- Waltham Forest borough council: Post-election checking discovered that the result in High Street ward may have been affected by human error in overstating the votes of the three Labour candidates by 1000 each. If this was so then Steve Terry (Labour) would not have been elected and Mahmood Hussain (Liberal Democrat) would have been elected instead. The ward can only be recounted and the result checked if an election petition is lodged.
- Newcastle upon Tyne city council: The ‘Programme for Government‘ document issued on Thursday announces that the Government will follow the Conservative Party’s policy and “create directly elected mayors in the 12 largest English cities, subject to confirmatory referendums”. Newcastle is one of the twelve cities.
- Barrow-in-Furness borough council: Following this years’ elections in which the Conservatives lost their overall majority, there will be a minority Conservative administration in control.
- Blackburn with Darwen council: The coalition of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and ‘For Darwen’ councillors, will continue in office for another year after no party won an overall majority in this year’s elections.
- Bury borough council: The Conservatives have formed a minority administration to control the borough after losing their majority on 6 May.
- Cumbria county council: Vacancy in Aspatria and Wharrels division due to the death of Council leader Jim Buchanan, also a Conservative. Term ends 2013.
- Fylde borough council: Vacancy in Ribby-with-Wrea ward, after the death of Independent councillor Lyndsay Greening. Term ends 2011.
- Halton borough council: Mike Shepherd, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat for Windmill Hill ward, has left the party and is sitting as an Independent.
- Liverpool city council: The ‘Programme for Government‘ document issued on Thursday announces that the Government will follow the Conservative Party’s policy and “create directly elected mayors in the 12 largest English cities, subject to confirmatory referendums”. Liverpool is one of the twelve cities.

- Preston city council: There will be a minority Conservative administration for the coming year in this council with no overall control.
- Rochdale borough council: The Liberal Democrats have agreed a coalition with the Conservatives to take control of the council, after losing overall control in this year’s elections.
- Warrington borough council: Following the elections this year in which the Liberal Democrats lost overall control, the Liberal Democrats have agreed to form a coalition with the Conservatives to run the council.
- West Lancashire district council: Vacancy in Skelmersdale South ward after the death of Labour councillor Doreen Saxon. Term ends 2011.
- Brighton and Hove council: Vacancy in St Peter’s and North Laine ward, after the resignation of Green group leader Keith Taylor who is to replace Caroline Lucas as Member of the European Parliament. Ms Lucas was elected to the United Kingdom Parliament last week and the European Parliament now prohibits ‘dual mandate’ members. Term ends 2011.
- Hastings borough council: The election of a councillor for Ore ward has been postponed until 17 June after the death of sitting Conservative councillor Roy Tucker who had been nominated for re-election.
- Isle of Wight council: Byelection on 27 May in Ryde South ward after the disqualification of non-party councillor Adrian Whittaker, who has been given a suspended jail sentence. Term ends 2013.
- South Oxfordshire district council: Byelection on 3 June in Crowmarsh ward following the death of Conservative councillor Nicholas Odd. Term ends 2011.
- Surrey county council: Vacancy in Worplesdon division after the death of Conservative councillor Mike Nevins. Term ends 2013.
- Bristol city council: The ‘Programme for Government‘ document issued on Thursday announces that the Government will follow the Conservative Party’s policy and “create directly elected mayors in the 12 largest English cities, subject to confirmatory referendums”. Bristol is one of the twelve cities.
- East Dorset district council: Vacancy in Corfe Mullen South ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Stewart Hearn whose challenge for the leadership of his group was unsuccessful. Term ends 2011.

- Shropshire council: Byelection on 1 July in Clee ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Paul Andrews, who had been suspended for four months by the Adjudication Panel for England. Term ends 2013.
- Walsall borough council: Vacancy in Bloxwich West ward after the death of Conservative councillor Melvin Pitt. Term ends 2012.
- Wolverhampton borough council: No party won overall control at the elections this year. There will be a Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition in power.
- Worcester city council: There will be a minority Conservative administration for the next year, after no party won a majority.
