Dates for byelections

  • East Sussex: The byelection due in Bexhill West division will be held on 10 January 2019.
  • London Corporation: As only one candidate was nominated in the election of an Alderman for Broad Street ward, the formal re-election of incumbent Michael Mainelli will take place at the wardmote on 12 December.
  • Rother: The byelection due in Bexhill St Marks ward will be held on 10 January 2019.

Other updates

  • Derby: Judgment in the election petition affecting Boulton ward was given last Friday. Judge Andrew Saffman agreed that the respondent, who won the election for the UK Independence Party, had made a false statement of fact about the defeated Labour candidate, but because the statement concerned was a political attack and not a personal one, it did not infringe the law; the petition has accordingly failed and the election is upheld.
  • Northamptonshire: The Secretary of State has announced that he proposes to postpone all the elections due to be held in the county in May 2019 for one year, pending a decision on local government reorganisation. The reorganisation is forced by the county council’s financial difficulties. Elections were due to be held in Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering, Northampton, South Northamptonshire, and Wellingborough (for all councillors), and in Daventry (for one third of the council).
