Bumper byelection update

This week’s updates on local electoral information are dominated by councillors timing their resignations to ensure the byelections fall on 5 May.

Results

  • Allerdale: The byelection in Dalton ward on 24 March was won by Marion Fitzgerald. Independent gain from the Conservatives.
  • Allerdale: The byelection in Moss Bay ward on 24 March was won by Frank Johnston. Labour hold.
  • Caerphilly: The byelection in Moriah division on 31 March was won by David Harse. Labour hold.
  • Craven: The byelection in Embsay-with-Eastby ward on 31 March was won by Brian Shuttleworth. Independent gain from Conservative.
  • Dundee: The byelection in Maryfield ward on 31 March was won by Lynne Short. Scottish National Party hold.
  • Essex: The byelection in Clacton East on 31 March was won by Colin Sargeant of the Holland-on-Sea Residents’ Association. The seat had previously been held by a representative of Tendring First but the party did not stand a candidate to retain the seat.
  • Kettering: The byelection in St Peters ward on 24 March was won by . Conservative hold.
  • Richmondshire: The byelection in Richmond Central ward on 31 March was won by Lorraine Hodgson. Richmondshire Independents gain from Liberal Democrats.

Changes of allegiance

  • Cardiff: Gretta Marshall, who was elected for the Labour Party in Splott division, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Essex: Andy Erskine, who was elected for the UK Independence Party in Tendring Rural East division, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor over disputes between the rival campaigns in the EU referendum campaign.
  • Poole: Marion Pope, who was elected for the Conservatives in Merley and Bearwood ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
  • Stroud: Mark Rees, who was elected for the Labour Party in Cainscross ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor after he was not reselected in his home ward for the forthcoming elections.

New vacancies

  • Barnet: Underhill ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Amy Trevethan. Term ends 2018.
  • Braintree: Witham South ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Corinne Thompson. Term ends 2019.
  • Breckland: Attleborough Queens and Besthorpe ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Karen Pettitt. Term ends 2019.
  • Brentwood: Tipps Cross ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Madeline Henwood. Term ends 2019.
  • Canterbury: Reculver ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Guy Foster. Term ends 2019.
  • Daventry: Woodford ward, after the resignation of an unidentified Conservative councillor (either Liz Griffin or Bob Patchett).
  • Dudley: Pedmore and Stourbridge East ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Mike Wood, now Member of Parliament for Dudley South. Term ends 2018.
  • Denbighshire: Denbigh Lower division, after the death of Independent councillor Richard Davies. Term ends 2017.
  • Epping Forest: Loughton Forest ward, after the resignation of Sharon Weston of the Loughton Residents’ Association. Term ends 2018.
  • Fareham: Fareham East ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Paul Whittle. Term ends 2018.
  • Forest Heath: South ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor James Lay. Term ends 2019.
  • Greenwich: Glyndon ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Radha Rabadia. Term ends 2018.
  • Hambleton: Northallerton South ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Tony Hall. Term ends 2019.
  • Ipswich: Castle Hill ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Chris Stewart. Term ends 2018.
  • Kensington and Chelsea: Abingdon ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Victoria Borwick, now Member of Parliament for Kensington. Term ends 2018.
  • Kensington and Chelsea: Abingdon ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Joanna Gardner. Term ends 2018.
  • Liverpool: Belle Vale ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Janet Kent. Term ends 2019.
  • Liverpool: Norris Green ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Debbie Caine. Term ends 2018.
  • North Dorset: Blandford Hilltop ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Mark Leonard. Term ends 2019.
  • North Dorset: Hill Forts ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor James Schwier. Term ends 2019.
  • North Yorkshire: Northallerton division, after the death of Conservative county councillor Tony Hall. Term ends 2017.
  • Pendle: Barrowford ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Christopher Jowett. Term ends 2018.
  • Pendle: Craven ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Richard Milner. Term ends 2019.
  • Redbridge: Roding ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sarah Blaber. Term ends 2018.
  • Runnymede: Woodham ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Robert Mackin. Term ends 2018.
  • St Helens: West Park ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Robbie Ayres. As his term was due to end in May, there will be no byelection.
  • St Helens: West Park ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Marie Rimmer, now Member of Parliament for St Helens South and Whiston. Term ends 2018.
  • Salford: Little Hulton ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Eric Burgoyne. Term ends 2018.
  • Sandwell: Soho and Victoria ward, after the sudden death of Labour councillor Darren Cooper, who had been the Leader of the Council since 2009. As he was up for re-election in May, there will be no byelection.
  • Sefton: St Oswald ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Peter Dowd, now Member of Parliament for Bootle. Term ends 2018.
  • South Buckinghamshire: Farnham Royal and Hedgerley ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Vincent. Term ends 2019.
  • South Kesteven: Deeping St James ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Leigh Johnson. Term ends 2019.
  • Southwark: College ward, after the resignation of Helen Hayes, now Member of Parliament for Dulwich and West Norwood. Term ends 2018.
  • Southwark: Newington ward, after the resignation of Neil Coyle, now Member of Parliament for Bermondsey and Old Southwark. Term ends 2018.
  • Spelthorne: Ashford North and Stanwell South ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Anne-Marie Neale. Term ends 2019.
  • Suffolk: Bixley division, after the resignation of Conservative county councillor Dr Alan Murray. Term ends 2017.
  • Swansea: Mynyddbach division, after the resignation of Labour councillor Byron Owen. Term ends 2017.
  • Tameside: Mossley ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Idu Miah. Term ends 2019.
  • Tendring: St Pauls ward, after the resignation of UK Independence Party councillor Ashley Mooney, who is emigrating to New Zealand. Term ends 2019.
  • Three Rivers: Carpenders Park ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Angela Roberts. Term ends 2019. As a result of her resignation the Liberal Democrats have regained an overall majority on the council for the time being.
  • Vale of Glamorgan: Rhoose division, after the death in a road accident of Independent councillor Philip Clarke. Term ends 2017.
  • Weymouth and Portland: Wyke Regis ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Craig Martin. Term ends 2018.
  • Wiltshire: Amesbury East ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor John Noeken. Term ends 2017.
  • Wokingham: Bulmershe and Whitegates ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Nicky Jerrome due to ill health. Term ends 2018.
