The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

  • Mansfield: The byelection in Sandhurst ward held on 27 June was won by Dave Saunders who regains the seat he lost in May. Mansfield Independent Forum gain from Labour.

Change of allegiance

  • Basingstoke and Deane: Terri Reid, who was elected for the Conservative Party in Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward, has left the party to form the ‘Independent Forum’ group together with Ian Tilbury (Overton, Laverstoke and Steventon ward). As a result the Conservatives now have exactly half of the seats rather than a majority.

New vacancy

  • Cambridge: Newnham ward, after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Lucy Nethsingha, now a Member of the European Parliament for the Eastern Region. Term ends May next year.

Dates for byelections

  • Cambridge: The byelection due in Newnham ward will be held on 8 August.
  • Stockport: The byelection due in Hazel Grove ward will be held on 1 August.

Other updates

  • Merthyr Tydfil: The council leader has requested help from the Welsh Government over its “fractious” political culture. The administration is formed by the Independent group but they do not have a majority. Two external advisers have been sent.
