The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.
Changes of allegiance
- Forest of Dean: Richard Leppington, who was elected for the UK Independence Party in Bream ward, has left the party to sit and stand for re-election as an Independent councillor. He is cabinet member for development.
- Rochdale: Kathleen Nickson, who was elected for the Labour Party in Balderstone and Kirkholt ward, has joined the Liberal Democrats.
New vacancies
- Medway: Rainham North ward, after the death of Conservative councillor David Carr. His term would have ended in May so no byelection will be held.
- Melton: Egerton ward, after the death of Labour councillor Michael Blase. His term would have ended in May so there will be no byelection.
- Southend-on-Sea: Milton ward, after the death of tLabour councillor Julian Ware-Lane. Term ends 2020.
- Sunderland: Washington South ward, after the impending disqualification of Independent councillor Paul Middleton (who was elected for the Labour Party). He has received a disqualifying suspended prison sentence. The seat will remain vacant as his term was due to end in May.
Dates for byelections
- Aylesbury Vale: The byelection due in Haddenham and Stone ward will be held on 7 March.
- Southampton: The byelection due in Coxford ward will be held on 14 March.
Other updates
- Sandwell: The Leader of the council, Steve Eling, who is councillor for Abbey ward, has been suspended from holding office in the Labour Party. He remains council leader for the time being, although by Labour Party rules he should step down. A councillor who is suspended from holding office continues to receive the Labour whip.
