Cheape win loses it for the SNP

The latest updates on local electoral information are as follows.

Results

  • Angus: The byelection in Carnoustie and District ward on 5 December was won by David Cheape. This is an Independent gain from the Scottish National Party and means that the Scottish National Party have lost their chance to get an overall majority on the council.
  • Lancaster: The byelection in University and Scotforth Rural ward on 8 December was won by Nathan Burns. Labour hold.
  • Maldon: The byelection in Maldon West ward on 8 December was won by Flo Shaughnessy. Independent gain from Conservative.
  • Newcastle-under-Lyme: The byelection in Madeley ward on 8 December was won by Gary White. He stood as an Independent and takes a seat previously held by an Independent who had last been elected for the Labour Party.
  • Telford and Wrekin: The byelection in Horsehay and Lightmoor ward on 8 December was won by Rajash Metha. Labour gain from Conservative.
  • Tonbridge and Malling: The byelection in Trench ward on 8 December was won by Georgina Thomas. Conservative hold.

New vacancies

  • Buckinghamshire: Amersham and Chesham Bois division, after the death of Conservative county councillor Martin Phillips. No byelection will be held as his term was due to end in May.
  • Essex: Halstead division, after the death of Conservative county councillor Joe Pike. As his term would have ended in May, he will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Rotherham: Dinnington ward, after the resignation of UK Independence Party councillor Ian Finnie. Term ends 2019.
  • Stratford-on-Avon: Red Horse ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Bart Mura. Term ends 2019.
  • Worcestershire: Redditch South division, after the resignation of Conservative county councillor Philip Gretton due to ill health. His term would have ended in May so he will not be replaced in a byelection.

Date for byelection

  • Bromsgrove: The byelection due in Norton ward will be held on 19 January 2017.
