The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East of England

  • Epping Forest district council: Vacancy in Loughton Forest ward after the death of Loughton Residents’ Association councillor Colin Finn. Term ends May next year.
  • Fenland district council: Byelection on 19 December in Elm and Christchurch ward after the death of veteran Conservative councillor Mac Cotterell. Term ends 2015.
  • Forest Heath district council: Byelection on 19 December in Market ward after the death of veteran Conservative councillor Malcolm Smith, a former chairman of the council. Term ends 2015.
  • St Edmundsbury borough council: Byelection on 9 January 2014 in Haverhill East ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Les Ager. Term ends 2015.
  • Southend on Sea council: Byelection on 23 January 2014 in West Leigh ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Gwen Horrigan due to ill health. Term ends 2015. The Conservatives would lose their overall majority if they do not retain the seat.
  • Tendring district council: There are two vacancies. Peter Bruff ward has a vacancy after the death of Conservative councillor Mitch Mitchell. St Johns ward has a vacancy after the sudden resignation of the Leader of the council, Conservative councillor Peter Halliday, who has fallen out with colleagues and with the local Member of Parliament. Both terms end in 2015.

  • Mid Sussex district council: Byelection on 19 December in Haywards Heath Franklands ward after the death of Conservative councillor John de Mierre. Term ends 2015.
  • South Bucks district council: Paul Griffin was elected councillor for Iver Village and Richings Park ward on 12 December. He gains for the Conservative Party a seat previously held by the Liberal Democrats (which was their only seat on the council).
  • Tonbridge and Malling district council: Byelection on 9 January 2014 in Borough Green and Long Mill ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Evans. Term ends 2015.
  • West Sussex county council: Byelection on 19 December in Haywards Heath East division after the death of Conservative county councillor John de Mierre. Term ends 2017.

  • Highland council: Byelection on 19 December in Black Isle ward after the death of Independent councillor Billy Barclay. Term ends 2017.
  • Moray council: Byelection on 30 January 2014 in Buckie ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Anne McKay. Term ends 2017. The current Independent and Conservative administration would lose its overall majority if the new councillor does not support it.
  • North Lanarkshire council: Byelection on 23 January 2014 in Motherwell North ward after the death of Labour councillor Annita McAuley. Term ends 2017.
