The latest information about local electoral matters is as follows:

East Midlands

  • Ashfield district council: Byelection on 2 May in Sutton Central after the resignation of Labour councillor Mick Coppin. Term ends 2015.
  • Boston borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Staniland South ward after the death of Conservative councillor Paul Mould. Term ends 2015.
  • Chesterfield borough council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both due to the resignations of Labour councillors. St Helens ward has a vacant seat after the resignation of Angela Reynolds, and St Leonards ward has a vacant seat after the resignation of Nick Stringer. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Daventry district council: There are two byelections on 2 May. Brixworth ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Nick Bunting. Term ends 2016. Welford ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Kay Driver. Term ends 2015.
  • Derbyshire county council: Vacancy in Buxton West division after the disqualification of Conservative county councillor Robin Baldry, who has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to theft of subsistence allowances. As his term was due to end in May, he will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • East Lindsey district council: Byelection on 2 May in Coningsby and Tattersall ward after the death of veteran Liberal Democrat councillor and former council chairman Ray Curtis. Term ends 2015.
  • Gedling borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Kingswell ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Paul Key. Term ends 2015.
  • Harborough district council: Byelection on 2 May in Thurnby and Houghton ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor and former council chairman Jan Tooley. Term ends 2015.
  • Kettering borough council: There are two byelections on 2 May. Avondale Grange ward follows the resignation of Labour councillor Paul Corrazo. Welland ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Alison Wiley. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Leicester city council: Byelection on 9 May in Abbey ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Colin Marriott. Term ends 2015.
  • Lincolnshire county council: Vacancy in Lincoln Bracebridge division after the resignation of Conservative county councillor Rachel Hubbard due to ill health. As her term was due to end in May, she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Newark and Sherwood district council: Byelection on 2 May in Collingham and Meering ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Kevin Rontree. Term ends 2015.
  • Nottingham city council: Wendy Smith was elected councillor for Bilborough ward, and Sam Webster was elected councillor for Wollaton East and Lenton Abbey ward, in the byelections held on 4 April. Both elections involved the Labour Party retaining a seat it had previously held.
  • Rushcliffe borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Leake ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Brian Dale. Term ends 2015.
  • Wellingborough borough council: There are two byelections on 2 May. Earls Barton ward will elect a successor after the death of Labour councillor Peter Wright. Redwell West ward will elect a successor following the resignation of Conservative councillor John Raymond. Term ends 2015.

East of England

  • Babergh district council: Byelection on 2 May in Bures St. Mary ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Peter Holbrook. Term ends 2015.
  • Basildon borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Wickford Castledon ward after the death of Conservative councillor Sylvia Buckley. Term ends 2015.
  • Broadland district council: Byelection on 2 May in Blofield with South Walsham ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor James Carswell. Term ends 2015.
  • Cambridge city council: Byelection on 2 May in Abbey ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Adam Pogonowski, who was originally elected as a member of the Green Party. As a result of his resignation, the Liberal Democrat administration has an overall majority. Term ends 2014.
  • Colchester borough council: Byelection on 2 May in West Mersea ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Glenn Granger. Term ends 2016.
  • Dacorum borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Watling ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Lloyd, now Police and Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire. His term ends in 2015.
  • East Hertfordshire district council: There are four byelections on 2 May. Bishops Stortford Meads ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Jill Demonti. Buntingford ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Surjit Singh Basra due to ill health. Hertford Castle ward follows the disqualification of Conservative councillor Russell Radford who has not attended a meeting of the council in six months. Watton-at-Stone ward follows the resignation of veteran Conservative councillor Nigel Poulton. All four terms end in 2015.
  • Epping Forest district council: Byelection on 2 May in Waltham Abbey Honey Lane ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Johnson. Term ends 2014.
  • Essex county council: Vacancy in Rochford South division after the death of Conservative councillor Roy Pearson. As his term was due to end in May, there will be no byelection for his replacement.
  • Hertsmere borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Borehamwood Hillside ward following the resignation of Conservative councillor Hannah David to concentrate on her Parliamentary candidacy in Harrow West. Term ends 2016.
  • Huntingdonshire district council: Byelection on 2 May in Brampton ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat group leader Peter Downes. Term ends 2016.
  • Ipswich borough council: There are two byelections on 2 May. Alexandra ward will elect a councillor after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Ken Bates. Whitehouse ward will hold an election after the resignation of Labour councillor David Ball who is moving out of the borough. Both terms end in 2014.
  • King’s Lynn and West Norfolk borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Snettisham ward after the death of Conservative councillor and former Mayor David Johnson. Term ends 2015.
  • Luton borough council: Byelection in Wigmore ward on Wednesday 10 April after the death of veteran Liberal Democrat councillor Roy Davies (who is not to be confused with veteran Luton Labour councillor Roy Davis). Term ends 2015.
  • Norfolk county council: Vacancy in North Coast division after the resignation of Stephen Bett, who has been elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk. He was elected as a Conservative but was sitting as an Independent at the time of his resignation. No byelection can be held because full council elections are due in May.
  • Norwich city council: Byelection on 2 May in Mancroft ward following the resignation of Green Party councillor Graeme Gee. Term ends 2014.
  • Rochford district council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignations of Conservative councillors. Hawkwell ward has a seat vacant following the resignation of Robert Pointer; the term ends in 2015. Whitehouse ward has a seat vacant following the resignation of Peter Webster; the term ends in 2014.
  • St Edmundsbury borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Abbeygate ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Richard Rout. Term ends 2015.
  • South Cambridgeshire district council: There are three byelections on 2 May. That in Balsham ward follows the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Pauline Jarvis. That in Meldreth ward follows the resignation of Independent councillor Surinder Soond, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat. That in Orwell and Barrington ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Ted Ridgway-Watt. The terms end in 2014 for the first two, and 2015 for Orwell and Barrington ward.
  • South Norfolk district council: Byelection on 2 May in New Costessey ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Jan Hardinge, who is leaving the district. Term ends 2015.
  • Uttlesford district council: Byelection on 2 May in Newport ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Peter Wilcock. Term ends 2015.
  • Watford borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Woodside ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Alan Burtenshaw. Term ends 2015.
  • Waveney district council: Byelection on 2 May in Harbour ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Tess Gandy. As a result of her resignation, the Conservative group now has an overall majority. Term ends 2015.
  • Welwyn Hatfield borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Haldens ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Ben Yetts, to take up a place at university. Term ends 2016.

London

North East

  • Darlington council: Byelection on 11 April in Lascelles ward after the death of Labour councillor Jacqui Maddison. Term ends 2015.
  • Durham Council: Vacancy in Aycliffe West division after the death of Labour councillor Enid Paylor. As her term was due to end in May, she will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Middlesbrough council: Byelection on 2 May in Pallister ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Barry Coppinger, now Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland. Term ends 2015.
  • Newcastle-upon-Tyne city council: There are two byelections on 25 April. Castle ward follows the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Laverick. South Heaton ward follows the resignation of Labour councillor Henri Murison, who is moving out of the city. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Sunderland city council: Byelection on 2 May in Houghton ward after the death of Labour councillor Kath Rolph. Term ends 2015.

North West

  • Allerdale district council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignation of Conservative councillors. Derwent Valley ward follows the resignation of former council leader Tim Heslop, and Wampool ward follows the resignation of Stuart Moffat. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Cheshire East council: Byelection on 25 April in Macclesfield Hurdsfield ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Gill Boston, who has been appointed to the East Cheshire Clinical Commissioning group. Term ends 2015.
  • Copeland borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Hensingham ward following the resignation of Labour councillor Norman Williams. Term ends 2015.
  • Cumbria county council: Vacancy in Distington and Moresby division after the death of Labour county councillor Cam Ross. As his term was due to end in May, he will not be replaced in a byelection.
  • Knowsley borough council: In three byelections on 4 April, Steff O’Keeffe was elected in Prescot East ward, Lynn O’Keeffe was elected in Prescot West ward, and Vickie Lamb was elected in St Michael’s ward. In each case the Labour Party held the seat.
  • Lancaster city council: Byelection on 2 May in Bulk ward, after the resignation of Green Party councillor Ceri Mumford. Term ends 2015.
  • Oldham borough council: Byelection on 9 May in Alexandra ward after the death of Labour councillor Dilys Fletcher. Term ends 2016.
  • Pendle borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Coates ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Janine Throupe. Term ends 2015.
  • Rochdale borough council: Byelection on 25 April in Norden ward after the death of Conservative councillor Ann Metcalfe. Term ends 2015.
  • St Helens borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Windle ward after the death of Labour councillor Pat Martinez-Williams. Term ends 2015.
  • Salford city council: Vacancy in Weaste and Seedley ward after the death of Labour councillor Jan Rochford. Term ends 2015.
  • South Ribble district council: There are three byelections on 2 May, all caused by the resignations of councillors. They are Howick and Priory ward, vacated by Conservative councillor Mary Robinson; Leyland St Ambrose, vacated by Labour councillor Sarah Tomlinson; and Leyland St Mary’s, vacated by Conservative councillor Michael McNulty. All terms end in 2015.
  • West Lancashire borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Digmoor ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Jackie Coyle. Term ends 2015.
  • Wigan borough council: Sam Murphy was elected councillor for Pemberton ward on 4 April, holding the seat for the Labour Party.
  • Wyre borough council: There are three byelections on 2 May. Park ward follows the resignation of Labour councillor Julie Grunshaw, and Pharos ward follows the resignation of her husband and fellow Labour councillor Clive Grunshaw, now Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire. Staina ward follows the death of Conservative councillor and current Deputy Mayor, Ian Perkin. Term ends 2015.

South East

  • Adur district council: Byelection on 2 May in Southlands ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Paul Graysmark. Term ends 2016.
  • Arun district council: Byelection on 18 April in Angmering ward following the death of Julie Hazlehurst. Term ends 2015.
  • Ashford borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Saxon Shore ward after the death of the leader of the council, Conservative councillor Peter Wood. Term ends 2015.
  • Canterbury city council: Byelection on 2 May in Seasalter ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Cyril Windsor, who is emigrating to Australia. Term ends 2015.
  • Cherwell district council: Byelection on 2 May in Hook Norton ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Victoria Irvine. Term ends 2015.
  • Dover district council: Byelection on 2 May in Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory ward after the death of Labour councillor and former Mayor Diane Smallwood. Term ends 2015.
  • East Hampshire district council: Byelection on 2 May in Liss ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Gina Logan. Term ends 2015.
  • Elmbridge borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Claygate ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Jimmy Cartwright. Term ends 2014.
  • Fareham borough council: Two councillors who previously left their parties to sit as Independents have joined the UK Independence Party. The first is Nick Gregory (Fareham West ward), who was originally elected as a Liberal Democrat, joined the Conservatives in July 2011, and then left them in September 2012. The second is Dave Whittingham (Fareham North West ward), who was elected as a Conservative but left the party in September 2012.
  • Gravesham borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Painters Ash ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Colin Dennis, who has since died. Term ends 2015.
  • Guildford borough council: There are three byelections on 2 May, all caused by the resignations of councillors. Ash South and Tongham ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Doug Richards. Ash Wharf ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor John Randall. Stoughton ward follows the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Wendy May. All three terms end in 2015.
  • Havant borough council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignations of Conservative councillors. Bedhampton ward follows the resignation of Jenny Wride. Emsworth ward follows the resignation of David Gillett. Both terms end in 2014.
  • Horsham district council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignations of Conservative councillors. Chantry ward follows the resignation of Chris Mason. Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead ward follows the resignation of Andrew Dunlop. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Kent county council: Vacancy in Gravesham East division following the resignation of Conservative councillor Bryan Sweetland, who was elected county councillor for Gravesham Rural division on 20 December 2012. The Gravesham East division will not be filled in a byelection as the full council election is less than six months away.
  • Mid Sussex district council: Byelection on 2 May in Cuckfield ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Katy Bourne, now Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex. Term ends 2015.
  • Oxford city council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignation of Labour councillors. Churchill ward follows the resignation of Joe McManners. Rose Hill and Iffley ward follows the resignation of Antonia Bance. Both terms end in 2014.
  • Reigate and Banstead borough council: Byelection on 2 May in South Park and Woodhatch ward after the death of Conservative councillor Frances King. Term ends 2014.
  • Runnymede borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Chertsey South and Row Town ward following the resignation of Conservative councillor Stewart Mackay. Term ends 2014.
  • Spelthorne borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Sunbury East ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Caroline Nichols. Term ends 2015.
  • Surrey county council: Vacancy in Earlswood and Reigate South division after the death of Conservative councillor Frances King. There will be no byelection as her term would have ended in May.
  • Tandridge district council: Byelection on 2 May in Burstow, Horne and Outwood ward due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Michael Keenan, who is opposed to the Marriage (Same Sex couples) Bill. Term ends 2015.
  • Thanet district council: Byelection on 9 May in Cliftonville East ward after the disqualification of Sandy Ezekiel, who was sentenced to imprisonment for 18 months and has not lodged an appeal against conviction or sentence. He was originally elected as a Conservative but was sitting as an Independent at the time of his disqualification. Term ends 2015.
  • Vale of White Horse district council: There are three byelections on 2 May. Two are caused by the resignations of Liberal Democrat councillors: Greendown ward follows the resignation of Andrew Crawford. Marcham and Shippon ward follows the resignation of Jane Hanna. Abingdon Peachcroft ward will also elect a councillor following the disqualification of Conservative councillor Peter Jones, who has not attended a meeting of the council in six months. All terms end in 2015.
  • Waverley borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Farnham Wrecclesham and Rowledge ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Nerissa Warner-O’Neill for family reasons. Term ends 2015.
  • West Oxfordshire district council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignations of Conservative councillors. Carterton South ward follows the resignation of Joe Walcott; the term ends in 2014. Witney East ward follows the resignation of Sian Davies, who is moving out of the district. The term ends in 2015.
  • Worthing borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Goring ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Steve Waight, now deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for West Sussex. Term ends 2014.
  • Wycombe borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Disraeli ward after the resignation of Labour councillor and outgoing group leader Victoria Groulef, who has been selected as Parliamentary candidate for Reading West. Term ends 2015.

South West

  • Cheltenham borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Warden Hill ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Josephine Tinkle. Term ends 2014.
  • Cornwall council: There are three vacancies. Bodmin East division is vacant after the resignation of Independent councillor Collin Brewer, following controversial remarks about disabled children. Ludgvan division is vacant after the resignation of Independent councillor Irene Bailey due to ill health; Rame division is vacant after the resignation of Conservative councillor George Trubody, due to his non-council career. As there are full council elections due in May, there will not be byelections for replacements.
  • East Devon district council: Byelection on 2 May in Feniton and Buckerell ward after the resignation of Graham Brown, shortly after he lost the Conservative whip. Term ends 2015.
  • Forest of Dean district council: Byelection on 2 May in Bromesberrow and Dymock ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jim Connell. Term ends 2015.
  • Mendip district council: There are three byelections on 2 May, all caused by the resignations of councillors. Ashwick, Chilcompton and Stratton ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Wayne Closier. Rode and Norton St Philip ward follows the resignation of Conservative councillor Matthew Ellis. Shepton West ward follows the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Sue Cook. All terms end in 2015.
  • North Somerset council: Byelection on 2 May in Weston-super-Mare South ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Deborah Stone. Term ends 2015.
  • Stroud district council: Byelection on 2 May in Cam East ward after the resignation (due to ill health) of the chairman of the council, John Hudson, who was elected as a Conservative councillor but was sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2014.
  • Taunton Deane district council: Byelection on 2 May in Taunton Halcon ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mel Mullins. Term ends 2015. As a result of his resignation the Conservative administration now has an overall majority.
  • West Dorset district council: Byelection on 2 May in Cam Vale ward after the death of Conservative councillor Richard Jungius. Term ends 2015.
  • Weymouth and Portland borough council: Vacancy in Melcombe Regis ward after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Farrell. Term ends 2016.

West Midlands

Yorkshire and the Humber

  • East Riding of Yorkshire council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignations of Conservative councillors in connection with the Police and Crime Commissionership for Humberside. Mid Holderness ward follows the resignation of Matthew Grove, now Police and Crime Commissioner. Howdenshire ward follows the resignation of Paul Robinson, now his Deputy. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Hambleton district council: Byelection on 2 May in Whitestonecliffe ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Nigel Clack. Term ends 2015.
  • Leeds city council:Byelection on 2 May in Cross Gates and Whinmoor ward after the death of Labour councillor Suzi Armitage. Term ends 2016.
  • North East Lincolnshire council: Stephen Harness was elected councillor for Humberston and New Waltham ward on 4 April. He gains for the UK Independence Party a seat previously held by the Conservatives.
  • Rotherham borough council: Byelection on 2 May in Rawmarsh ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Shaun Wright, now Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire. Term ends 2014.
  • Ryedale district council: There are two byelections on 2 May, after the resignations of a married couple of Conservative councillors. Vivienne Knaggs has vacated Pickering East ward, while her husband Keith (a former leader of the council) has vacated Ryedale South West ward. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Scarborough borough council: There are two byelections on 2 May, both caused by the resignations of Conservative councillors. Esk Valley ward has a vacancy after the resignation of Tim Lawn. Streonshalh ward has a vacancy after the resignation of Sandra Turner. Both terms end in 2015.
  • Sheffield city council: Byelection on 2 May in Fulwood ward after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Janice Sidebottom. Term ends 2014.
