Apologies for the delay in posting this week’s update; this was due to the compiler electing a Chancellor of his University. The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:
Redcar and Cleveland council: Byelection on 17 November for two seats in Zetland ward, after the resignations of Ron Harrison and Jim Rogers. Both sitting Liberal Democrat councillors for this ward have resigned over a legal dispute over whether they were disqualified from election in May as members of the teaching staff of Eston Park School; this is a foundation school which is funded through the local education authority and raises the question of disqualification under s. 80 (1) (a) of the Local Government Act 1972. Ron Harrison is seeking re-election as he is no longer working at the school. Both terms end in 2015.
Warrington council: Byelection on 17 November in Poulton North ward after the sudden death of Liberal Democrat councillor Colin Oliver, who won the seat in a byelection on 28 July. Term ends May next year.
Adur district council: Byelection on Tuesday 18 October in Cokeham ward after the death of Conservative councillor Norman Wright. Term ends May next year.
Cornwall council: Byelection on 27 October in Bude North and Stratton division after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Nathan Bale. There is another vacancy in Wendron division after the death of Independent councillor Mike Clayton. Both terms end in 2013.
Dorset county council: Karl Wallace, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Bridport division but left the party in July to sit as an Independent, has joined the Labour Party, citing opposition to Government policy on the NHS. He is still listed as an Independent on the council, possibly because he is the sole Labour member and two councillors are needed to form a group.
Bradford city council: Vacancy in Great Horton ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Rev Paul Flowers. Term ends May next year.
North Yorkshire county council: Byelection on 27 October in Thornton Dale and The Wolds division due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Ron Haigh, who has moved out of the county to help care for his wife. Term ends 2013.
